Disclaimer: this is my opinion, your mileage may vary. My bushcraft skills are above average and I've spent a lot of time in the back country. My philosophies are for a rural environment.
To begin, if you think you're going to bug out for weeks or months at a time just stop reading. That's not realistic for where I assume your skills sets are. If that's your long term survival goal, then go get yourself a Mora knive and walk into the woods for weeks at a time with nothing but that knife and a reference for learning. There's no amount of gear that will sustain you for an extended period of time, other than a solid blade. So if that's your goal, get a knife and go learn wilderness survival. Build your own shelters, traps, weapons, make your own fire starters.
If you goal is logical to your skill set and you simply need to get from point a to point b in an emergency situation than my plan will help you learn where to start.
You need to start with your EDC. Do you carry a pistol? Knife? Flint rod?
My EDC consists of my wallet which has a 50 dollar bill folded behind my license and 2, 25$ silver coins. I keep these for bribery or just general emergency scenarios. I also keep some air distress signal cards and
My key chain has a number of items consisting of a p98, a Flint rod, and a 210 lumens flashlight.
Finally, I open carry when I can. I can't conceal carry, I'm not old enough.
Then of course I have a knife and a phone.
So alone in my EDC I have a fire starting capability and 2 defense capabilities which is key in any situation.
So onto the philosophy of my bag, my kit. My goal is to get from point a to point b. From my location to my home. Therefore its somewhat dynamic.
Water is my need. I keep a full water bottle, and a 100oz blatter, a water purifier and water purification tabs.
Second is fire. I already have 1 fire capability in my edc. I also have matches, and a pocket torch. I also keep my pocket Rocket and 2 canisters for if I need quick and discreet heat or have to cook something.
Shelter is simple. I have 100 ft of paracord and a backpacking tarp that I've sewn a reflective blanket to. I can wrap up in it like a bivvy if I have time to build a lean-to or I can build it as a shelter myself using paracord.
I keep about 6 high calorie protein bars and some basic mountain house food. I'm getting 2600 calories from my power bars and then the freeze dried food. Should be sufficient for what I'm doing.
I keep 1 complete change of clothes and an extra pair of socks.
For first aid, refer to Nutnfancy's level 1 kit. It's exactly what I use and bulletproof.
I don't carry any personal hygiene. It's not that big of a deal to me in this situation. The time I spent bathing and brushing my tooth I could cover a quarter mile.
Blades? Buck Hoodlum or Esse Junglas. I can do anything with those. Chop a tree, make a spear, etc. More often than not its the Hoodlum. It's lighter weight and does a good job at what I need it to. Always remember, a big knife can do a small knives job but a small knife can't do a big knives job.
The end game is weight vs. firepower vs. redundancy. Keep your kit as light weight and redundant as possible only keeping what you absolutely need. Remember you're pretty much going to be walking for at least 8 hours a day, while tomahawks and shovels are nice, they're not necessities. A large knife can do the role of that tomahawk or shovel and then some. It just can't do it as well.
Sacrifice your specialty tools for tools that can be used across a range of tasks
For christ sake, buy yourself a good pair of boots. Fill them full of water and wear them all day to break them in. Then place them in your car. Your car is always close by and it's a good place to store them. Don't get no ****ing tactical Oakley boots or military boots either. They sucks for trekking. Been there, tried that. Solomon is my recommendation.
I can put all that in a 1500 cubic inch bag. Which is another important item. Buy something lightweight and quality. Urban environment? Get a solid color. In the woods? Camo all the way. I currently use a Field and Stream bag that was $20 from Dicks. It works well but it's showing use. I'm about to upgrade to a Maxpedition stitka.
It also needs to stay as small as possible. I guarantee you that you are more apt to grab a 1500ci bag than a 35 litre backpack. Also, you look stupid carrying around a bag that weighs 80 pounds and takes up an entire seat. My bag fits under my car seat. Small and discreet.
Also, weight and redundancy. weight and redundancy weight and redundancy weight and redundancy weight and redundancy weight and redundancy
And that's all I got for now. I gotta get in bed. I work in 4 hours.
Edit: realized I missed my glove system and a few other small things. I'll quote this and add them in the morning.

The confidence points are ****ing me hard. I'm 10-4, and in 10th place.
Shooter, the only thing I'd change about your gear is the money. I'd have three $20's instead of one $50, in case you need to pay off more than one person, and/or in case the item/service you're buying isn't worth $50, and you can't get change. It also allows for haggling.

Toying around with the idea of solo traveling somewhere for a weekend in a couple weeks. Mostly to get away from everything and see something new. Ideas?
