Make sure your tent has a ground cover and rain fly, or you'll be in for a fun night if it rains. You'll also need:

Toilet paper
Matches/lighter
Knife

I always have a couple loops of duct tape around my nalgene bottle just incase.

never hurts to have enough rope, tarps, axe/maul, knifes, I normally take like a 5 gal water bag and just fill that up, leave it in the tent or in the car

i dont carry much if any of the **** yall list. lol

i carry a 3 person lean-to tent, with no ground bivy or rain fly. it stays dry under it.

cooler? hell no
lantern/flashlight? no. headlamps. spend money on a nice one, it works more than good enough
toilet paper? depending on the area, but usually no. leaves work fine

duct tape, knives, lighters... of course

really all i bring thats big at all is food, sleeping bag, tent and a fleece. i dont bother bringing changes of clothes unless its winter. I bring a fairly well built first aid kit at this point, mainly because i have my WFR cert. 2 headlamps, a bearline(and 2 biners in case one gets lost) headnet(for bugs...) and an extra pair of nice wool socks

He's probably not backpacking. When he said he's bringing a cooler, I figured he's car camping. I don't bring much of anything, but he's probably not going for minimalistic here, Skins.

I'm currently in the process of building a kayak and am planning on doing a good amount of camping/touring this summer (as much as one can in Kansas, at least). Any of you guys have experience with stuff like that?

Most my hiking is in for fly fishing. Hike in camp and fly fish then hike out.

Never built a boat; my father and I talked about it a lot, but life frequently gets in the way. I do a ton of kayaking/canoeing though. Anything in particular you want to know?

Wat he said. Poles make the down hill way easier. My knees bothered me with out them but now I'm good for at least a few miles downhill before they act up

Never got into using trekking poles. Just picked up an Arc' Gamma MX for the fall/winter transition. Been doing some day hikes through the Ohio parks with my dog on the weekends and it is an awesome jacket!

So, quick question to y'all minimalists out there. Or just those of you that have bivys or use them.

Best bivy for the buck?---I'm about to just purchase the REI minimalist bivy for $100. But i don't know if I'm just throwing money out the window an could get something more worth it for $50-$100 more? Not sure.

Finally ST has a backpacking thread

I'm about to go backpacking in Peru! Ended up quitting paintball for this kind of stuff. Even more addicting then paintball in my opinion. Love them both though
