mine jammed up a few times; once i backed out that screw a few times, I've yet to have a problem.

What screw are you referring to? Mine has been fantastic.

on the back of the motor box, there's a screw. it controls how much tension there needs to be, before the gears disengage

The spire is more expensive and eats batteries, but it has a tiny profile.
