I did have a telescope goldfish and a chinese algae eater both small living in a 6 gallon Fluval Edge on my desk but the CAE ****ing attacked the goldfish and ripped his scales off. Euthanized them both with clove oil to knock em out then Vodka to kill them in their sleep. Poor things.

Now that I've cleaned up the tank and got a heater, I put 3 otocinclus, 1 green corydoras and a Betta in there. Great community, there's no fighting, everyone eats a different kind of food, tank actually stays super clean now and the pewpies are super small. Need to get pictures.

Just a head's up, Corys tend to do a lot better in a group of 6. But, if you add another 5, I don't know if the Edge's filter would be able to handle that.

The Edge has a filter that is actually pretty overkill, cycles the tank over 100 times in one hour so it can hang, but that's way too many cory's for 6 gallon tank. He seems fine with being alone, maybe I'll give him one friend, but he seems to be chillen', he's already grown a lot in the last week and a half.

The nanos can be purchased with better lighting and a protein skimmer, of course that ups the price even more on them, have been looking at them lately

I have a Biocube that I completely took the hood off of and used LED's on and the LEDs worked amazingly well.

ya i don't really want to spend over 400 on the tank alone. is that stuff necessary for a SW nano tank? like the protein skimmer?

and wouldn't leds cause a problem with corals or do they provide enough light for the corals to live?

The protein skimmer is almost essential if you want to keep corals. The LEDs work amazingly well with the corals. If you're looking for something cheap, I would recommend just going with fake corals. There's a lot of stuff that goes into SW and if you don't want to spend that much money to keep them alive, then I would either go fake or stay with FW.

So, I am living in a dorm room right now with my one betta fish named Richard. He lives in a one gallon tank right now. I wanna upgrade to a 5 or six gallon tank and add more fish. How am I going to know if my betta will be doing alright with friends?

My betta lives with a fiddler crab, 3 otocinclus, and a cory catfish. Pretty much pushing it with the crab (this particular guy is really calm and not keen on fish meat, and he also is getting less than optimal salt due to his tank mates being tropicals(damn pet store people didnt tell me that this was going to be the case, terrible impulse buy)) but the others get along extremely peacefully and clean up the mess left behind.

If you end up getting better lighting and a skimmer, yeah. The thing with corals is they need a lot of light (The "prettier" ones at least) and some water movement so they don't get detritus settling on them. A lot of them are filter feeders or have appendages that come out at night to catch particulate from the water.

Shockadocta- You generally don't want to have faster moving fish with your betta, as they will stress him out and possibly nip at his flowing fins. What were you planning on putting with him?

I was thinking about like 2 cory's, a shrimp or snail, and something else that swims in the mid-depth range?

If it comes to it, im just gonna get a second tank. I just want more fish haha.

I don't know if a shrimp would last too long with a betta. Corys are great fish and do the best when in a group of 6 or more, but if you do a few of them it should be fine

i might look into getting either a biocube or a nano cube since i like the cube shape of them, i'll probably just get live rock for it and some fish and inverts for the beginning then upgrade the light and get

edit: idk if i want to spend that much on a nano or bio cube tank, i might just get like a 30 gal from a local pet shop and turn it into a SW

If you do end up going with either one of those, definitely go with the nano cube. I have a biocube and it's great, but the nano has much better accessories and is much more easily upgraded than the bio cube.

Honestly I think I might wait until there is a dollar a gallon sale and pick up a tank. Would it be cheaper going that route then to buy a nano cube?

Added some little plants. Have this on the way for my crab:

Dry area for land dwellers underwater with a feeder tube to put in crickets and stuff.

Eh, there are good and bad things about doing it that way. When you buy a cube, you've already got everything you need (minus a stand) prepackaged for you. Some people don't like the filtration that comes with the cubes so they end up making their own custom filters for it. All I did for my nano cube was take out the Bio Balls since I had coral.

If you do the $1 gallon route, you can get a much bigger tank (Easier to maintain for a first SW tank) for very cheap. The downside is, then you're stuck having to buy everything else separately and trying to make sure that it all fits together.

It all just depends on how much work you're willing to put into the tank. If you need help, I've got no problem helping you build a tank on a budget. You can also check out www.reefcentral.com for some great tips on how to do some of this stuff as well.
