Grandstand pricing: A Modest Proposal

I am no Jonathan Swift, so I will not attempt to analogize this with a satire of selling children as food to afford to enter the grandstand at the PSP events. However, I do think that my idea will provide a nice medium between the PSP charging to enter the grandstand area, and the players wanting to watch some pro games while they are at the event.

My suggestion is this:

Utilizing the same barcode scanning system that is being used to grant or deny players access to the pits (which is working out extremely well, by the way), the PSP will allow players/staff to enter the grandstand area for a set period of time (1-2 hours) per day while at the events. The standard rate of entry will apply afterwards, and will obviously apply to any non-staff spectators.

Yes, theoretically, a player/staff will be able to enter the grandstand area and stay for the remainder of the day. This will be remedied by the fact that once that player/staff leaves after their allotted time is up (to go to the bathroom, get food/beverage, run an errand, etc.), they would not be allowed back in. The human body can only hold it in for so long.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Like? Dislike? Let your opinion be heard!

I am for it.

I typically leave the event pretty soon after our matches end for the day and watch the webcast at the hotel. I don't want to be at the event/in the sun long enough to warrant purchasing a grandstand pass for the day. If I had the option to watch a match or two per day, I would likely take advantage of the opportunity. And the notion that the PSP already has a player tracking system in place is of value. I admittedly have seen too few grandstand matches this season to know if overcrowding could be an issue.

I like it Zap, very good idea. But when the persons time is up. Lets say they are still in the stands. How will the PSP staff be able to find that person and let them know there time is up and they have to exit? When there are a bunch of people in the grand stands. I like this idea though a lot and can definitely see this being used at WCO and Cup.

I don't see how this provides any benefit to the PSP whatsoever.

I agree with this statement, really not a ton of incentive to provide that service. I think their is value in that it would increase the experience provided at a psp (its really cool to sit in a full grandstands) which could in one way or another turn into dollars for them down the road but that's quite a stretch. The real argument is that for $2850 per team (xball d4 and up, 5 man is $1100) why that doesn't include complimentary grand stand passes. I know it cost's obscene amounts of money to run paintball tournaments and they experience cost's that your local tournament scene isn't going to have but it is still a large amount of money and it seem's reasonable for that to be included in the cost. The obvious counter argument is obviously if $25 is going to make or break you at a PSP you shouldn't go but its more the principle of the matter. Or maybe just include complimentary grand stand passes for when your team is eliminated or just a Sunday only deal.

Fuller grandstands for prelim matches. This in turn makes the webcast look better.

This is very true. I worked for a professional sports team arena during college and what we would do during certain televised sports we would give upgrades to the lower bowl so that it would look better and that there were no empty seats in the building.

This would in turn be a positive thing for PSP Webcast for when they are showing potential investors the audience that attends the events. I wish that psp would do 3 grandstands like they did when it was NXL back in 06/07 era. Maybe for cup they could do that.

Well if they filled them, then they could show potential investors and companies looking to advertise at these events, that people really do come to watch these events.

This would work well for prelims. The way I see it, you let the players watch for a certain amount of time, they will bring other paying spectators with them who want to watch with those players. Let one guy in for free, he brings 3 paying customers instead of losing out on 4 paying customers.
