College Dog

I'm in college and me and my 6 roomates are renting a large house for next year. We are looking at dogs that would be a good fit. It's a large corner house in the city with a park across the street. We want an intelligent, medium size dog, 30-60 pounds approximately. Any suggestions for breeds? We were thinking Beagle or Borador

basenji's are known to be one of the smartest, if not the smartest, dogs in the world and they are medium in class. They are, however, too smart for their own good meaning they learn how to open doors and get on top of the counter to open pantry's and get food lol. They are pretty cool dogs though.

Boston Terriers!!! they are like Mini Pitbulls but you dont have to worry about the neighbors being scared of your dog AND the Ladies LOVE THEM!!! Put a lil spiked collar on him and your talking CHICK MAGNET!! They also love lots of people and noise (so they love to party, I used to take mine to parties all the time), can handle a versatile schedule, and did I mention that they LOVE BEER???

id say go look at a local shelter and find something you like, almost all the college dogs were i go to school are from a shelter just outside of town and theres unique mixes and some purebreds.

if you want a specific breed probably a pit since they are people dogs and are always excited to see new people (aka when you have people over and pregaming for the bars or what not).

This is my little girl Liby. She's six months old right now.

Boarder collies are the smartest dogs in the dog world. They also fight your weight criteria. If you get one however be prepared to give it lots of attention and exercise.

beagles are capable of making some of the loudest most deafining noises you will ever witness for something of there size. they also may not do well with the amount of foot traffic going through a college house. now a puggle on the other hand may be better, and from the ones ive seen love to play.

edit- and a puggle will absolutely pull *****es

I strayed away from the idea of getting a dog while I was in college. Just didn't really seem logical. I knew i was going to be out of the house for the majority of the day, and even though I lived with 4 other people, I couldn't rely on them to watch MY dog. Also there was a lot of high traffic and not much of a yard for a dog to play in. Then I figured the party factor, for a young dog, so many people can be a lot to handle, and I'd hate to lock my dog in a room for several hours.

Just some food for thought

Blasphemy - My dog's got to weight at least 75 lbs and scare the **** out of my neighbors.

I would NOT, however, suggest a dog for a high-traffic college environment. With that many people it will be EXTREMELY difficult to make sure that you are teaching it consistently, a dog who does not have consistent training and 'rule enforcement' can become very anxious and act out because their position within the pack is never clear cut and defined. Those who let the dog on the furniture may find the dog 'pushes the boundaries' and doesn't listen consistently.

High - traffic situations and busy households can also cause for a stressed out dog as well. They like excitement, but they like a calm and structured lifestyle most of the time.

Agreed. If you're really set on a dog make sure someone commits to keeping him/her.

Hate to be that guy, but I'd suggest a cat. They're still fun, albeit in a very different way, but they're so much easier to take care of while one is in college. You can leave them alone all day and they won't really give a _.

Otherwise just find a mutt whose personality you like. Mutts tend to be a bit healthier.
