ECS TECH SUPPORT THREAD. If you got a problem, look HERE.

Alright, from this point forward, anyone who has ANY problems with ECS, PLEASE post in here instead of emailing myself or loafy... This way everyone can post problems, and solutions, in this thread. Hopefully, it gets stickied.

PICTURES OF AN ECS CABLE:

IS YOUR BOARD PROGRAMMEABLE? Here's how to check: if your board is the top one (The one without the sticker on the microchip), its progreammable. Otherwise, you're out of luck.

PROBLEM:
Backed up fine but when i tried to write....

C:\sp12>sp12 -i -wpf o_v_s_v17.hex
SP12 version 2.0.7 performing init...
Path to _sp12rc and _sp12dev: C:\SP12\
Running in SP12 cable/dongle compatible mode.
Enabling AVR serial reading/programming...
The device code bytes 0,1,2: 0x1e, 0x92, 0x3 were read
from parallel port 0x378 and indicate the following:
You have connected an AT90S4433
The device was made by Atmel

Performing chip erase...
Writing content of o_v_s_v17.hex into program area.
!!................................................ .............
Readback ERROR after 3 write retries.
Writing 0000 (0, B00000000) to the parallel port data bits.

Any clue what happened?

Thanks
Scott

SOLUTION:
Direct from loafy:
needs to have a battery connected and hold the power button during programming... its a power issue. The parallel port isn't providing enough power.

My advice: MAKE SURE you scratch off the waterproof coating on the contacts. Use a paper clip and scratch the insides of the holes thoroughly.. like 15-30 seconds per hole.. That helps. I find with my board I usually have to try programming it a whole bunch of times, and sometimes moving the pins around helps, because the waterproof coating hinders contact.

radio shack has everything i was just there yesterday...but loafy is making mine...my soldering skills are not what they use to be :-(
you need:
DB-25 connector
DB-25 hood
7 220 ohm resistors
IDE cable and 6 pins or some other connector that will work
100uF capacitor

he should sell them for 50 a piece and make a nice profit. He's not out for volume, no point in making them $20 or something... but it would line his pockets nicely lol

OK, I think I know what this means, but I wanted to make sure...

I built the programmer, and hooked it up to my computer. When I go to run the first SP12 setup command (sp12 -i), it comes back and tells me "Initialisation has failed (parallel port not found..." or that the sp12src file is corrupt. Since it's just now creating the sp12src file, I would imagine that it is not corrupt.

This leads me to believe that my programmer is crap. Is this a correct assumpton?

you dont really need even decent soldering skills. when I made mine, I had never soldered anything before in my life. you just have to use that grey stuff between your ears. here is a tip for people that might make their life a little easier . in loafys diagram and in the pictures, it looks like the ground needs to goto multiple pins. if you look at the diagrams that come with sp12, they only show the ground wire to pin 25. thats what I did and i didnt use the capaciter.

Parallel driver? If you're talking about the giveio.sys driver, I've already loaded that. If it's something different, then I don't know if I've done it.
