I am looking to purchase (used) a Cannondale CAAD5 Hardtail and the breaks do not work.
The seller states the stock breaks are junk and the whole system should be replaced (they are hydraulic) He suggested a new mechanical break/disc system. Looks like it may run around $200.00 includes installation.
The front shock is bad as well however it can be “locked down”
I can get the bike for $200.00. It retailed for around $1200.00 back in the day. The frame is very light and gets good reviews.
Anyone ride Cannondale bikes and can offer some insight?

edit: I didn't see the fork was bad. You can get the shock rebuilt for a reasonable price and that may fix the problem. Or you may want to find out what else is out there, for the money you sink into the bike you may be able to find a nicer one.

I had a cannondale although it was more of an urban assult/heavy use bike. I loved it, im notorious for breaking any kind of bike/ vehicle I get on and my Cdale still rides perfect. Brakes are easy to swap your self and shouldn't run more than 100, look into the avid BB5 line of mech. brakes. The fork on the other hand is gonna cost an arm and a leg to change if you want something nice.

I'm dropping the bike off at a local shop this afternoon to see what the cost will be to fix/replace the breaks.
The "shock" in the front fork is "spongy" and according to the seller, it's bad.
Because I am NOT a true off roader (jumps, rock hopping etc) I can switch the front fork to be solid and that will work for me.
I am not sure what the other componants are...I do know that guy selling it is a psycho bike rider and spends huge bucks on his bikes (well over 5k for one bike!!) so I assume the bike has good parts, especially for the way I ride.
i didnt read the thread but if i were you i would go with a huffy.

What year is it? Maybe the frame and other working components have some value and you could part it out (sell the parts individually) on ebay or wherever, and make a little profit, even if the hassle/cost of getting it working properly is too much.

Honestly you have to be retarded to not be able to put on a pair a brakes your self. Its literally 2 bolts, you'd save your self a nice chunk of change unless you have a shop thats honest which isnt common anymore

There’s a little bit more involved than just replacing two bolts. But you are right about installing both front and back myself, It’s not exactly rocket science.
its just 2 small allen bolts on each caliper, then route the lines and install the levers. Simple as cake, I would never pay anyone to work on a bicycle considering how simple the are to work on
