I was offered an opportunity to be a second shooter for a wedding photographer in my area. He told me that I would not get paid very much, but that he would teach me everything he knows and eventually pay me an equal rate once my photos were on par with his. Rather open ended, but I do not know if this is a common thing or not.
Have you ever done this before or have any advice about this? I am not sure what to do in this situation.

this is a very good opportunity for you depending on if its a good wedding photog or not. I do this with a friend of mine currently b/c I wanted to get into weddings, he is a very good photographer here in michigan/chicago. You can learn a lot from doing this, that would otherwise take you years to develop the right skills for it.
"I was asking cash for my dm7 because I wanted to get a geo or a luxe, but Im willing to add cash but I have to pay for an abortion for my ex girl friend so try not to clean me out ok”.
If he is actually offering to pay you, even just a little, that is a very good deal. Most of the time you are just there to learn and no money is involved at all.
Plus just the learning of everything is also a very good thing.

I do this with a local wedding/ portrait photographer here, it started like 7 months ago when she started her business and felt like it would benefit her to have another person doing it with her. so i have been helping her establish her business. Originally she couldn't pay me, and still cant but instead has been buying equipment that i can use and buying equipment for me (85/1.8, and a d700) so it has worked out really well for me. If you can get something steady out of it and educate yourself go for it, you will never regret it.
the only thing i would say is to make sure you are learning about the business side of things too, no school will ever truly prepare you for choosing vendors and dealing with misprints and writing contracts, they can try and try but until you work these things out yourself and really understand the way things work and how you want to present yourself as a photog you will never truly understand the need for a great business sense when it comes to being a hired photographer.

This man speaks the truth... make sure to pay attention to how he handles vendors and customers... also pay attention to his contracts..
