Fed seizes three mosques and a skyscraper

Quote:
The federal government said Thursday it is seeking forfeiture of properties belonging to the Alavi Foundation and Assa Corp. -- accused of transferring money to a bank owned by the Iranian government -- including a Manhattan skyscraper and at least three mosques.

I haven't heard of the Fed seizing religious property before. Should be interesting to see how this pans out, although it will probably take a few years.

I don't think it'd matter what the property is, they'd seize it. We've got to stop Iran from making "WMDs", if they want them they've to buy them from us!

Quote:
The tower is owned by 650 Fifth Avenue Company, a partnership between the Alavi Foundation and Assa Corp., the Justice Department said. The amended complaint alleges that the Alavi Foundation provided services to the Iranian government and transferred money from 650 Fifth Avenue Company to Bank Melli, Iran's largest state-owned financial entity.

U.S. and European Union officials last year designated Bank Melli as a proliferator for supporting Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs and funneling money to the Revolutionary Guard and Quds Force, considered terrorist groups by the United States.
Essentially they're being accused of funding terrorism.

Obviously they will, because they just did. However they usually avoid touching religious property, it's the same reason they're exempt from taxes. This is a pretty extraordinary situation, especially when you consider they're trying to seize a whole skyscraper. I don't think I've heard of that happening either.

Like I posted in my other post, the group is being accused of funding terrorist/Iran. Are you really surprised it's being seized?

The only part that gets me is: They're accused, not necessarily convicted.

Is this going to be like those drug-house raids where they pretty much take everything but never file charges?

This seems like it's political more than anything. I suppose America has to cut all ties with Iran or every terrorist in the world will have nuclear bombs.

The mosques? Yes, I am. The skyscraper and rest of the properties? Nope.

I'm pretty sure it's the skyscraper and four mosques, there's no other assets.

The real question is what happens to the mosques if it's shown the group is/was involved in any illegal activity.

If they're actually convicted, then **** it - scorched earth. If the religious building isn't genuinely a separate entity from the convicted then it should go down too.

If the asset is surrendered to the government wouldn't the government just sell it?

Why should be building being used to funnel money to Iran not be burned down?

Burning down a building has much more upside than selling it.

In what could prove to be one of the biggest counterterrorism seizures in U.S. history, prosecutors filed a civil complaint in federal court seeking the forfeiture of more than $500 million in assets of the Alavi Foundation and an alleged front company.

The assets include Islamic centers in New York City, Maryland, California and Houston, more than 100 acres in Virginia, and a 36-story office tower in New York.

I probably should have just used that article to begin with, it's a bit more detailed about the situation.

My mistake, it made no mention of it in the other article.
