Canon walk around lens

Hey all, i'm set up right now with a canon 40d, a canon 28-135 is lens, and a canon 70-200 2.8 IS L lens. I need something wider than 28mm, and the lens creep on the 28-135 is driving me nuts. The two that i'm looking at right now are the canon 16-35 f/2.8 and the 17-40 f/4. Any recommendations for a walk around?

I'd go the 17-40mm route myself, but I also don't think the e tra stop is worth the $700 more it would cost. Plus, I e only heard good things a out both, so you can't go wro g either way.

I've never used the 17-40, but I had a good experience using my friends 16-35 for about a month. He has the version 1 and it is fairly wide on a 20d, noticeably wider than a 28mm. But like robbie_vlad said though, you can't really go wrong with either.

damnit, i just passed up a barely used 17-40 on ebay for like $600. It sold right away.. oh well. I'll have to keep an eye out, trying to trade my sl8r for some nice glass.

If I were going to buy a walk around lens right now, it'd either be a 50 1.4 ( or L if you can spend that kind of cash), a 28 1.8 ( or 24l if again you have the cash), but I have a fetish for primes, always have.
But if it were a zoom and cash were tight I'd get the 17-40L.

My standard lens is the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and I absolutely love it. Good walkaround range on a crop body, great IQ, and having constant f/2.8 available is very handy. Plus, it's cheaper than any L-glass you'll find!

I'm generally wary of off-brand products, but after reading tons of happy reviews of this lens, and then using it quite a bit myself, I'm very happy with it.

any thoughts on the 24-70l? Im living with the 28-135 right now, not my favorite, but it's all I've got, so at least the 24 would be an improvement on the wide end.

I have both of those lenses, and despite being ridiculously happy with both the 50 1.4 and the 28 1.8, I would recommend neither for a walkaround. 24-70L would be my recommendation.

A walk around needs to be flexible, not a prime.

A prime for a walk around lens would be cool, but only because it will force you to be more creative. I use a 28-70 for my walk around lens, but that is more so because I don't want to carry around an expensive lens in my neighborhood.

Same here, I love primes and will almost always choose them over a zoom.

Or you need to be more flexible. If I were to recommend a lens it would be a prime... both for price and IQ reasons.

24-70 = best lens purchase ever.

It's on my camera probably 70% of the time.
