Unless you run into a bunch of jerks... Most people are more than willing to take you under their wing and help you out here and there so you don't get shot right away.
It all depends on the field/location and if they do a good job of splitting the beginners and advance players. Just be mindful that you're always going to get some hotheads/jerks out there...just don't let them get to you and don't take it personal. Be outgoing and talk to the other players and they'll look out for you. Watch and try to learn from the better players in the group. Even when you're in the dead box, watch how those still alive are playing and moving. Go with a positive attitude and you'll have a blast.

Don't feel alone man, This is how most people start out... This is how I started out.
When you go alone you will deffinetly feel out of place, We all have been there. It is ideal for you to go with a friend because at least you will have someone to talk to, when you go alone (I am not going to sit here and bull**** you) you will probably be alone for the first time.
But its all good because when you go, you will usually find 1 or 2 people that are pretty cool that you can have a regular conversation with, Then it will eventually lead up to them inviting you to their table then Bam! there you go you just now made some friends.
But the answer to your question... Yes and No. It will suck to show up to the field alone not having people to talk to (Especially when you try and whoever you are attempting to start a conversation with is being a prick and blows you off.) But then after that 1st day you usually will find at least one chill person to hang with.
It is one big step most 1st timers have to take, Just remember these simple rules.
1.) Don't be a arogant douche bag
2.) Always Be friendly (Trying to be a hard *** will get you nowhere)
3.) Everyone makes noob mistakes on and off the field and when I say everyone I mean EVERYONE! so don't feel like an idiot when you **** up because everyone has been there.
4.) If you make a noob mistake and certain people make fun of you, Just brush it off and continue having a good time (These are the **** bags you will want to avoid)
5.) Keep your mask on, Barrel Condom on when the game is over, And don't put someone on their *** if they are being a prick.
Lets face it, Every sport has a bunch of spoiled little *** holes that think they are hot **** with their shiny ego and unfortunately these are the majority people who will be total douche bags but if you make a newbie mistake and these kids snicker at you like I said above just brush it off and keep on having fun.
If you decide to stick around and you get better then that will be your perfect opportunity for revenge
Dont worry about it, honestly I love to see "noobs" out playing. Whether their alone or not theres always the people that will rat on you and say you suck but their's always going to be ones that stand up for you. It may not be by saying something back to that person, but most likely by saying they want you on thier team or whatever it is. The best thing to do with the jerks and douches if their ratting on you is to just ignore them and keep playing, that pisses them off more than anything because the reason their acting that way is to make themselves look better than they are. As long as you keep going strong you'll be just fine. Heck, I even get ratted on by the ***** but you just move and.
Hope this helped

pretty much it. that sounded like a rant more than anything else lol.
dont take experienced players bunkers, do what your team tells you and dont shoot anyone on your team by accident and you will be welcomed with open arms to the pb community
Just be friendly and outgoing in the staging area. If you aren't awkward and you're clearly not an experienced player, most walk-on groups should be willing to let you jump on with them. After the game ends, walk back with them and talk with everyone. You'll blend in with the group and people won't see you as an outsider.
Another thing to do is not act like a douche yourself. Not saying you will but don't act like you know everything and start making yourself look retarded. If you have a question ask it, most people will be glad to help.
So I'm just going to wing it like you all suggest and will take a few of those tips. Somehow I've become completely obsessed. I feel like I want to look at paintball guns online all day.
So hopefully I have a blast. If I do, I already have the gun I want picked out. One concern is that I live in New England and the winter is coming. I don't know how many times during the winter the average player would go. I'm guessing there are a lot of noobs playing right after the holidays with shiny new guns, but besides that does the sport die down significantly in the snow?
Thanks,

ive been going by myself for the last month to a legit field, not many newbs there but going alone is a drag to be honest. just make friends when you get there.
people dont talk to you because you dont talk to them, dont act like because you dont know them you dont talk to them. they dont care, just talk paintball its what youre all doing anyways. youll be more than likely to get to know the regulars and have a blast.
