well this weekend on my way back from the casino i hit a deer going 65 and i was driving a 1998 accord and my car might be totaled. im still talking to my insurance, but i looking for a safer car that sits up a little higher than a car. i was possibly considering an xterra or some kind of jeep. im looking to only spend about 7k. and im wanting it to be atleast a 2000 or newer. iv searched ebay and craigslist and those are the only vehicles of that size that i like. are there any suggestions?

what happened was i hit it and my buddys got out to go move it out of the road and when they were like 2 feet from it it jumped up and chased them back to my car. then it ran away.
In all honesty, $7,000 isn't a lot to work with. In order to buy a larger vehicle for that amount, you're probably going to end up with something older and lacking when it comes to certain modern safety components (side air bags for example). It is probably enough money to buy a newer small car with modern safety components, but then you're at the mercy of many larger vehicles on the road. To suggest something would mean needing to find a compromise.
Personally, I would either use that money as a down payment, or save up a bit more. Then find yourself a newer full size car or mid-to-full size truck/suv that is rated highly in safety and reliability. Keep in mind, also, that vehicle ratings only pertain to comparisons against vehicles in the same weight class. (So even though a Camry and a Suburban both get Five Star ratings, the Suburban would most likely come out ahead in a vehicle-on-vehicle crash.) That doesn't mean to buy the biggest thing out there, as smaller vehicles have their merits (like better handling, braking, and fuel economy), but it's something to be aware of.

Well the safest car isnt a car that gets in an accident and protects the driver its the car that gives the driver the ability to get themselves the hell out of dodge before the **** hits the fan. IE a car that allows you to see the deer, realize that its in the way, and maneuver or slow down to avoid it.
That being said when i was around 10 or so the car in front of us stalled as we were crossing railroad tracks the *******s behind us were to close for ust to back up and get around. Thats about when the train signals started flashing. So my dad being a pragmatist put the car in 4low and pushed the stall car and a few other far enough forward for us to get off the tracks.
Moral of the story: the best safety system is yourself. Same goes for guns and other dangers.

The whole safety thing is cool, but now front ends are huge crumple zones which cost us 4k in damages after my mom hit someone going like 8mph.
Yea, it's kind of stupid. It's a trade off, really. Sure you're out more if you're in a fender bender, but you're still alive after an 'OH ****' accident.
