I attended the tech class at PB Extravaganza so I got pretty good insight on the new Dye NT marker and I wanted to share my experiences. First off id like to say this is just a basic review that I wanted to post to give the public some idea of what are some of the features of the new Dye NT paintball gun.
The instructor for the class was Billy Wing. For those of you who don’t know him he is a pro paintball player for the Ironmen and he is directly involved in day to day engineering of the Dye product line. I do not know Billy on a personal level but he did a GREAT job teaching the class. The only interaction I had with him previously was him cheating me on the paintball field several times when we played the Ironmen in NXL….Just kidding it was probably me that did the cheating. Anyway lets get to the gun.
Appearance:
The gun has very nice cuts and the milling design was top notch. On the Limited Edition guns The new PGA (Proprietary Graphic Anodizing Technology) has a really cool look too it. As I mentioned in another post it is like nothing I have ever seen before. This new technology will change the appearance of paintball guns for the future. It leaves Dye with infinite possibilities as to what kind of patterns they can put on future guns.
Feel:
The gun is designed smaller and lighter than the DM9 and DM10. It is now the lightest high end paintball gun on the market weighing in at 1.6lbs. The redesigned ultralite frame is now even lighter in weight and still has the same comfort we have become familiar with in the Dye gun line. I did not get a chance to put a tank on it but the gun felt pretty well balanced without one.
Ok now for some pretty basic points that really caught my eye about this gun. Maintenance is a key to keeping any paintball gun working at top performance. Dye really did their homework on this gun. The manual is one of the best i have ever seen and i put it there with the Luxe manual. There are 4 things that I really liked.
1st is in the manual they have suggested service chart. Basically what they did was mounted 10 of these guns to a machine and test shot them until each moving o-ring failed. They then came up with a maintenance chart based on the results from the testing. This lets you know about how often you should change each individual o-ring thus preventing any breakdown of your marker from standard usage.
2nd is all the o-rings are color coded so even a 3 year old would know which o-ring goes where. This is now standard on all Dye and Proto guns.
3rd is the electronic board has a factory reset on it. The cool thing about this is if you screw up your gun by changing the dwell or other board settings you simply reset it. It’s the first thing you should do if your guns malfunctioning. It will eliminate anything you may have done in error while adjusting the board.
4th and final point is the new tool-less ultralite grip. Now you can pop off your grip in seconds to make board adjustments or to change the battery. The grip was little tricky to get off at first and I actually broke mine because I did it wrong. They are actually going to put out a short video so people understand how to take them off. After you do it once its fairly easy but you just have to be careful. it basically has rubber tabs on it and they pop in and out of the grip frame.
The last thing I wanted to mention was the Boost Bolt Technology. It’s a really cool spool valve bolt with a twist. The functionality is listed in the description on every website so I wont your waste time with that. I just wanted to say that this bolt allows you to adjust it with a shim kit they provide. It basically takes up air volume in the back chamber of the bolt and it will increase the efficiency of the gun. It’s a pretty cool feature for the people that like to tinker with their marker. You want more efficiency you simply add more shims.
Here are a few points that I have not had the chance to experience but they are things I thought should be mentioned. This is the first spool valve gun that does NOT sacrifice air efficiency. Anyone who has owned a Spool valve knows they provide the best accuracy available but they could not compete with the air efficiency of the poppet valve designs. That has now changed. With the new Boost Bolt Technology you can now get the same kind of efficiency you get from the poppet valve guns. This is probably one of the key features if you are considering a high end gun. Do I want efficiency or do I want accuracy? Now you don’t have to choose.

Also I watch the video on the tool less grips, they seems nice, but what is preventing paint getting in between where the grip two halves come together. Is there a seal of some sort?

What i meant by the quote is in the past you had to choose between lets say a Ego for the best efficiency or a DM or a Luxe for the best Accuracy. The new NT has both of these features in one gun. To my knowledge the sound of the gun will not change with or without shims. It just offers you a way to tinker with the efficiency the gun can achieve. Even if you don not use any of the shims the new Boost bolt gives you more air efficiency than any other Spool valve on the market.
As for the grips they seal very tight and i dont see any issue of paint getting in the frame. Time will of course be the determining factor but from the looks of it they look fine.

How would it be tournament legal with the tool less grips?
how are you going to pull off running to your bunker, sliding in, take the grips off, change your settings and start playing? its easier to change settings on any oled board than removing grips and oled boards are legal.
How would it be tournament legal with the tool less grips?
if you can get away with opening the grips hitting the dip switches, changeing the settings replaceing the dipswitch, and not getting caught.... then i would think that the reffs would be able to hear the diffrence and grab your gun
The grips are legal... and you would never have time to take it off, reprogram and reinstall.

What is the NT frame made of, please tell me its not composit :S ?
Its not composite, Its an aluminum frame.

the only markers that currently embrace that trend are the NT and the geo
you can top hat mod dm's and pm's too
Sure you can adjust the luxes firing chamber, you just dont know about it yet.
