I have purchased a Yamaha 5.1 system for my room today. Everything sounds great when I use my xbox 360 and viewing regular cable. The one problem I am having is when I am using my PS3 via HDMI cable i have no sound coming from the speakers only the speaker thats integrated on my tv. I have connected my PS3 into the HDMI in port on the receiver and i have another HDMI cable coming from the HDMI out to my LG hdtv. I have checked my receiver to see if it is on the correct setting and everything checks out.

Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Go into the PS3 settings, and check your sound settings. Make sure its set to the right output.

The receiver might just have passthrough sound/video. What model is it?

already checked it out and it is set on HDMI.

I can't find what I'm looking for (to be honest I'm not sure where to look) but some receivers will use HDMI only for switching purposes, meaning you have all of your HDMI sources going to that before the TV, but they won't pull sound from the HDMI, they just pass it through to the TV, expecting the sound to come from optical or RCA.

I'm sorry Supra I forgot the last part of the model number lol maybe thats why nothing came up.

Heh, no worries

The Newegg specs say this:

HDMI Input: 2 Audio/Video Switching

HDMI Output: 1 Audio/Video Switching

Leading me to believe it just switches the audio/video, but doesn't take audio from the HDMI stream. You'll have to get an Optical cable and hook your PS3 up that way.

A lot of receivers do that. I'm not entirely sure why they have it setup that way, though...

Another option would be to use that, have it go to your TV, then see if your TV has an optical output. It would be like this:

PS3 > HDMI > receiver > TV > optical > surround

You could have up to two components hooked up that way.

It has HDMI passthrough only. A lot of receivers do it. They pull sound from everything but the HDMI ports are only there for switching purposes.

Yeah it doesn't make much sense, and to be honest, I'm not sure why they do it.
