A California woman died after falling at least 1,000 feet while hiking in Zion National Park Sunday.

Nancy Maltez, 55, of Glendora, apparently stumbled on the north side of Angels Landing, a high peak above Zion Canyon, said park spokesman Ron Terry.

Another hiker called 911 to report the fall at 8:24 a.m. Maltez was with her husband and three children when she fell from the top of the sandstone peak, and died on impact. Search-and-rescue crews found her body before noon, Terry said.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office and the park service are investigating the fall. The last fatal fall in the Angels Landing area, a popular hiking spot, was in June 2007.

Angels Landing is located in the southern part of the park, about 50 miles from St. George. The West Rim Trail from the Grotto to Scout Lookout is temporarily closed for the investigation. Climbing routes on the north side of Angels Landing are also temporarily closed.

**** gets nerve wracking at parts where all you have is a little chain and a few inches of rock to walk on with a huge drop next to you

Damnit, I was going to make a smart post saying that it probably wouldnt be that different from a human falling at 200' or so because the body would reach terminal velocity around there so there wouldnt be a difference. But then I did the research and apparently the human body reached terminal velocity when it falls from a height of 1880' so this entire post you read fails.

while i'm probably an *******, (ok, definitely an *******) in my opinion, if she was on a hike with her three kids, she wasnt exactly taking the super extreme trail of death. this tells me that the dumb ***** got too close to some edge she didnt need to be close to, and fell the **** off, like a *******

natural selection, too bad she had the three kids before she fell

its actually pretty dangerous if you arent paying attention it gets really thin at points to where you need to hold on to chains in the wall
