I usually work it backwards, I fill the paper with black and erase in the detail work. Then use fixative to lock it in and use grey and white charcoals to finish the piece.
I've tried this before, but only once. I never learn very much from trying mediums just once, then putting them down. I totally need to set aside some time to experiment with charcoal some more so I can develop the skill, but I've been so into painting lately that it's tough to stop lol.
