Website advice

I've had my website for a while I think about 2-3 years. I'm getting a lot of spam/bot traffic which is fine I guess since I've moved everything to a datacenter off of my 6 servers. Could someone provide me with tips or any like advice on getting SEO traffic?

Easiest is probably putting a fortinet firewall or something similar to block/filter all of that traffic. If you have something already in place, you'll need to configure your settings.

So SEO traffic?

Here's a story of a client I had a few years ago, checking the google, they're still on page 1 so here's what I did.

I stumbled into doing some work on this for a client not knowing exactly what I was doing.

They were an small-medium sized biz in the custom cabinets field here in Austin. When I got to them they were on page 2 or 3 of google and wanted to be on page 1.

After reading up on some SEO articles which can be found via the google. A big help for me was rewriting some of the company pages to be more web crawler friendly.

So for instance they wanted to pop up on 'Austin Cabinets' or 'Custom Cabinets in Austin'

That meant placing text similar to that on their website in the body and the title. So where before they may just have a title with their company name. We changed it to, '[company name] Austin's premier locally owned custom cabinet maker.'

Sounds really simple and for the most part it was, a lot of my work came out of adding some descriptive filler since a lot of pages just had pictures of product and links.

What I didn't have to do because it was already done which you should do depending on what kind of website you have is try to get your site linked to from other sites. This can be hard especially if your site is some lame micro blog or something useless.

Second, you should already be using some kind of analytics program like google analytics. Web crawlers will give you extra points for using them and they offer some pretty decent information.

I fear this all may be way too insightful for ST: Tech. If so TLDR... RoflWaffles are better than ur websitez

Also, some sites claim they will get you links if you pay a fee. Don't do it! Sites like that just post links to your site with your chosen keywords on static sites, which only attract more spam and crawlers. You can also get in some pretty big trouble with Google for that.
The most important part of SEO is making content that is link worthy. Meta gets you found, but links keep you on the front page.

Depending on what software you're running on your site, you may have a plugin or three good for combatting spam.

Or are you just getting a lot of bots crawling the pages "indexing" it? If this the case there isn't much you can do about it, other then try to edit your robots.txt to discourage them, or to track and block their IPs. Both are a gesture in futility though unless it's a really huge problem.

It's a lot to process but I highly recommend reading Moz's Beginner's Guide to SEO - I'm just getting into seo and am making a paintball site pretty much to start implementing some of the skills I learned from that guide. I'm not expert by any means but it's a start
