I'm the "Older" guy. I'm glad you guys enjoyed the video, but I'm a little disappointed by the production. From them misspelling my name, to how the tryout was set up(there were times that we had to wait for walk ons to use the field), to how the video doesn't actually show very much paintball...I'm kinda disappointed. Not because I didn't make the cut, more because it's not the kind of video that you watch and it makes you stoked on paintball.

"Less chat and more splat" would have been nice. Just my 2 cents.

Aside from misspelling of your name, which is inexcusable obviously. I respectfully disagree with the other parts of it.

What makes The Roster an awesome series is the focus on things that happen off the field, even if it's just as far away as the pits during a game. The best scene in last years series is probably watching the guys from X-Factor who are in the pits as the final point plays out, and watching their live reaction instead of just showing the final flag hang as it appeared on the webcast. As great as the on field stuff was, it was a lot more awesome and borderline emotional seeing Alex Martinez's reaction.

While I probably would feel the same way about the walk-on issue if I was trying out, it's actually a major part of the story for a team like Aftershock. It was talked about on here, on the PBAccess breakdown, and I believe even in Matty Marshall's podcast, that a team like Aftershock is a huge underdog because they don't have a facility to practice comfortably, or even at all because of weather. I believe even this episode put a lot of focus on having to use or better yet share a field that operates as a normal business at the same time.

The drama, I guess that would be the appropriate word, of what a team even at the pro level goes through, makes The Roster not just another paintball game highlight reel. Similar to the Impact series, the best parts don't have anything to do with showing paintball being played, it's everything else. Most of the games have already been watched on the Millennium webcast.

A bunch of people buy a season pass of The Roster, knowing full well how that team finished at each event months ahead of the actual airing. And many even remember how those games went down because they watched them live. These videos are popular because of the other stuff.

Well, personally, if i wanted to watch fluffy reality tv I'd tune into the Kardashians or housewives, but that's just me. My point about the field situation might have gone over your head, Eclipse is putting out good money for this show, im sure arrangements could have been made, even if they had to pay pbx a premium. Im Sure that there was some kind of deal between shock and PE, all 60 some people bought crappy paint at top dollar for the tryout, im sure someoneis profiting from it. When you're filming anything on set, there are logistics that need to be handled. Between this point and spelling my name wrong without a simple vverification (they took all of my contact info), And because i was there...i feel justified in expressing myself. I've played all over the west coast, this was not my first tryout or practice with the big boys. The title of this episode is catchy, i met everyone at the tryout including the Swede, he'sa nice kid but i don't see shock picking up a 21 year old thats been playing in Europe for 4 years....so to me, the whole thing just seems a little fake.

Good question, he was pretty chill, we chatted a bit after the event. I think he lives in Boston for now?

Hey bro. Dan Napoli the Director here. Sorry about botching your name. I went off the signatures, so I must have misread something. Feel compelled to clarify some stuff....

There was nothing fake or controlled about this try out, some of which to my shagrin. :-) We had zero control over the set-up, drills, booking, ect. But that's sort of the point. Many teams (like Xfactor is season 2) have their own field and hence have total control of everything. For those seasons, we could really control drills, camera positions, reps, ect

The reality is this is how Shock lives, so any attempt to clean that up, or you know, rent the facility out for them, that's "fake" and not sincere to their experience. For the record, we never have and never will influence/control who a team picks up. It's Hardknocks, not the Kardashains. As to them not picking up jacop, and that being fake either watching the webcast or future episodes speaks to that. Also we had no idea he was coming, or I woulda had 7 cameras on him, from the airport to the other airport.

I'm sure the experience was really not the most fun for you guys trying out, given the conditions and amount reps. Totally get that Keep in mind that a lack of reps for you guys means lack of reps or takes for us too. :-) "Too chatty more splatty" is modernize comment of what we got a lot 15 years ago "too much talky more shooty." (Which we hear less of now days) It's just simply not what we are doing. We aren't producing paintball "music videos" or "paintball porno" as we jokingly call em anymore. We are really trying to tell stories, and examine how things happen and show who these people are. Last thing is simply that nobody from the Eclipse or Shock end made any profit from this, but I know Eclipse certainly spent money and crew and travel! ;-)

Sorry the production and experience was disappointing for you. I think we've made a great show for the budget and conditions that stands up with stuff like Hardknocks, The Association, & Being Liverpool. Thanks for participating! Best Dan

Not really, but think what you want. Ive played with and against much better players, people that challenged my snapping and gun fighting skills. I didn't find that at this tryout, and i dont think Shock did either. The thing people from outside the US paintball scene don't get is the politics involved. Which is fine, yyou're probably better off not knowing. But what i Did come away with after this tryout is a better understanding of politics, marketing, and since no one could stop me in snapping drills, i guess i learned where i stand with my gunfight skills. I dont like talking trash about people, especially people i dont know, so i wont. All i know is that I played well (better than some that made the last cut). Also, i think its worth mentioning that I'm pretty sure Shock didnt pick up anyone, including the Swede. There were teenage kids in the last 9 people...my inside info told me that none of them actually got picked up. I was also told that Shock already had some veteran ballers lined up for the spot.

Think about it. This was more of a fundraiser than an actual tryout. Shock has been in the game long enough that they dont have to go looking for randoms.

Dan, if I may rebutte;

With all due respect, you had a sheet from everyone that participated in the tryout. You had my name on this form, along with contact info. It seems a bit unprofessional that you didn't verify this stuff before putting out a show for the masses.

I would tend to agree that nothing was controlled at this event, the coordination showed that. My point is that the viewer gets to see very little about the players paintball skills...which seems like the essence of this show? Paintball player has skills, paintball player makes team because of said skills. At least in the X factor video it showed some of the snapping drills, showed who played well and who didnt. This production seemed all over the place in my opinion and didnt really show anyones skills, the Swede or otherwise. This wasn't a hardknocks tryout, aside from how many people turned out for it. If you mean Shock is a hardknocks kind of team, sure but this tryout wasnt that gritty, and frankly it seems a little fluffy on video. As for all the hype around the Swede-is it because he's from Sweden, or because he's got skills as a paintball player? I'm all for a good story line, but no one had any idea who he was before this...and he's in his early 20's, been playing for 4 years in Europe...unless he is absolutely a stand out player in the US, i just don't get it. I mean no disrespect in this, I met Jacob, we talked-he's a nice kid and I have nothing against him whatsoever.

The 'Experience' was fun for me. I'm a competitive person and I like to challenge myself. What I think is lame is that "We are really trying to tell stories, and examine how things happen and show who these people are." REALLY sounds like it could be the mantra for a new age reality TV show. I would be ok with that statement if you guys actually used more paintball footage so that the viewer got a better look at WHY these people made the cut. Hell, you didn't even show the battle within the last 9 people!

I disagree about who did or didn't make any profit from this video. When any teams sponsors ask them for a favor, it comes at a price. Favors are traded, teams are funded, etc. One way or another, we 65+ people generated revenue and people are paying to watch this production. Someone is seeing that revenue, lets be real!

I will never buy another episode for that reason, too much fluff. As an avid paintballer, I want to see up and coming talent. I want to see what makes these people qualify to play at the highest level. If you're not capturing that(and you didn't this time), you're failing. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the opportunity and for addressing this comment.

Dude this video is about a paintball team, its not a paintball tournament video. People watch these to see how pro teams are outside of playing. There is plenty of Paintball going on in this video, if you have an issue address it internally instead of coming on the post and complaining about it. It comes off as whiny and your attitude probably played a role in you not getting picked.

Dude,

1) You werent there.

2) I was very humble at the event, i even gave away the rest of my paint to people going on. I'm sure that if you were there Or asked any of the other participants about me, no one would have anything negative to say about how i conducted myself that day.

3) My issues with the film aren't internal. They butchered my name And wasted a lot of peoples time and money, including mine. I Know I'm not the only one that feels this way, probably just the only one mature enough to articulate it.

4) I didnt expect a tournament video, i expected to see a video that shows why these players are given the opportunity to play at this level.

5) Since you weren't there, you don't even realize that you got to see zero footage from the battle between the nine people that went on.

6) Plenty of paintball? Where? Sit there with a stop watch, I'll bet you accumulate a lot more time on fluff that you do any actual footage that shows any of the skills of the player. I dont know why you think it's about the team, but not the players. There's no logic in that.

Lastly, This isn't my first rodeo, so don't lecture me. If you were there at the event, then had this stuff to say-I would take you serious and examine myself. But you weren't, and no one else from the show has chimed in with their opinion yet.

They wasted your time and money? First off you went to try out for a pro team not to be on a Paintball video. Secondly you knew going in you had the possibility to be cut quickly, they did not force you to fly out and spend the money. You should feel lucky to have any video time, you're acting like you are owed something for what? You didn't make the cut get over it, and OMG spelling you're name wrong? Believe me you are the *only* one who cares.
