Phazed's sprung insight bolt!

hello everyone.

like many of y'all, i love the insight. and like many of y'all, i want it to be the best it can be. my team and i have always had a history of modding and tinkering with our markers, and i think this is possibly the best mod i have done in my 5 year pb history.

i did a short review on the insight a few months ago, filming in the winter, i got crazy bolt stick. i always wished that someone would make a mod that would allow a spring in the insight to compensate for this bolt stick, and to my astonishment, no one did. so i came up with an idea to do it myself.

i took the new soft face bolt and had it machined a bit. i had about 1mm by 1mm taken off of the very end of the bolt... here's a picture!

the point of this is so that a spring can clip in just right so it wont move around when the bolt is in motion. without this machining, the spring would get in between the bolt and the flapper and seize up the whole operation. it would get jammed. after machining, this is how the spring should sit on the bolt.

as you see, it sits in place. it "snaps" on. and now in case the spring snaps out of place, which has happened in the course of my testing, since the grove is etched in to the bolt, the spring just tries to fall back in place, and doesn't get caught in between the bolt and the flapper. here is a crappy diagram of where the spring sits in place and how it pushes the bolt up! it pushes forward on the bolt by pushing back on the brass refill plug.

now that that's shown and explained, what are the results?

PROS!
i went from shooting about 240fps to 280fps.
the kick is so much smoother, comparable to clones.
its still loud though.
no more bolt stick!
it fires deeper in to an empty tank with this new added forward assist.

CONS!
if the spring is too strong, the bolt won't reset all the way. it will enough to not leak, but not enough to let another ball fall in the stack without pressure. what do i mean? if i have a full hopper, it will feed and work wonders. if its the last few shots and there is no pressure on the stack, it wont fall in place and shoot. i remedied this by clipping 1 coil off of the spring. that's the only thing that's wrong with it.

WHAT I DON'T KNOW
how it effects efficiency. i will find out soon i hope.
no torture testing done, so i don't know if things will break apart over time.

i hope you guys enjoyed this. any questions, feel free to ask.

ps.
i turned up my bolt delay from 5 to 10 just in case. no other settings were messed with.

Edit:
This is a non professional mod. I'm sure bob long will come out with an even better one and am waiting eagerly for it.

Any risk of the spring working its way into the brass refill plug and doing damage? Would a nylon/delrin washer back there help at all or just cause more issues?

Very nice and very interesting. I'm excited to see a vid and hear how it goes after some additional testing ... Interesting idea, I would have thought that would cause an issue with the Flapper o-ring.

@gretch
For how I have my spring, it won't work it's way in. I ordered a few more springs to see if I orient it a bit different, or clip it at different lengths, what would happen

@gamer
I could do it, but i'd rather not.

@big papa
Originally, before I machined the bolt, the spring would get caught between the bolt and the flapper, causing the bolt to get stuck. It scratched up my stock bolt pretty good when I tried to un jam it. With this new grove etched in, the end of the spring sits nicely on it, and doesn't go past the flapper. I was hoping it would, that when it cycles, the spring would glide through the flapper, but it doesn't. It turns out I didn't machine enough material off for it to do so, so when the spring is snapped in place, it stretched just enough to make it too wide to fit through the flapper, causing it to not get jammed and also giving it the force needed to push the bolt forward enough to see the benefits.

I haven't had any bolt stick issues (knock on wood), but interested to see the overall tested results.

hey mate, lovely work here on the new bolt.

2 questions, Where can this be purchased from (the original aftermarket bolt) and would you consider modding one for me, then shipping to Australia?

Thanks in advance.

Bob Long sells the bolts - or your local Bob Long dealer in Australia (is there a Bob Long dealer in Australia?)

What spring did you use for this?

I used a ccm return spring.

I milled a bunch more off of the bolt on Wednesday. I wasn't satisfied with what was going on. Now it's working even better with no clipping issues whatsoever on the flapper. I will update with pictures tonight. A field test and efficiency test is in the works for august 17th.

No, the spring doesn't pass the flapper, and if it does, it gets pushed back in by the machined bolt.

I took more off the bolt so the end of the bolt could go in and out of the spring easier. After some light testing last night, it works better.

I imagine it slows is down some. I know the spring absorbs a lot of the shock, and because of it, it's super smooth compared to how it was stock.
