Cheap or free OS for obsolete Netbook?

I have a obsolete MSI netbook that I want to put back into use for surfing and writing. The WinXP that used to be on it is long gone and I have little experience with the likes of different Linux distros. It barely ran XP anyways.

What would be free or cheap to get for the described use?

Pretty sure this is the model I discovered under my sofa:

Just snag some more RAM and, uh, "obtain" a copy of Windows 7. So long as you disable most of the graphical interface stuff like Glass or Aero and a few other things, you should be able to make it pretty usable.

I'm in the same camp. My EEE is almost the same specs as your MSI and it still has XP on it. **** loses support in another month so I need to make the switch to 7. I had 7 on an identical netbook that I eventually crashed the harddrive on, and it ran good for awhile. Like I said though, gotta disable a lot of stuff to keep the resource usage down.

ubuntu is good, but you want a lightweight, pretty version of linux? look for mint. its awesome, based of same thigns ubuntu runs, and easier on hardware, it ran great on my netbook with atom and 1gb of ram real easy.
