Shooting downfield...

Does the PSP rule book forbid a player from shooting a shot downfield prior to the start of a point? Last event we had about :50 until th start of a point and one of our players wanted to point out a lane they were shooting so they shot one ball down it. Th ref at the start gate said if he did it again that would be a major. Total bs or legit?

Describing what can eliminate a player, I haven't looked deep enough to see if this holds a direct penalty or not.

6.4.2.2. Player discharged a marker downfield and/or in the general direction of their opponent prior to the point start, or prior to "tagging up", or

It is not expressly forbidden however it IS a courtesy to the other team and the referees. The same lane could have simply been pointed at with a finger or a barrel.

Without taking the time to dig through the rules, that referee was well within his rights. A little extreme? Perhaps. But not a completely bogus call.

From what I can tell doing this makes you "inactive" - essentially your out but you're not expected to know you're out. In theory then you would start with 4 bodies and the guy that shot down field goes back to the pit.

Pretty much the gist of it, yes.
