Should I buy the Empire Axe or Valken Proton?

Hello!

I have found two ads for a used Empire Axe for $300 OR a Valken Proton for $240...

Both are mildly used and in great condition.

I am having a hard time deciding. On the one hand, the Axe from a money standpoint is a better deal. But I am having a hard time deciding from the point of view of performance. The most important thing to me is a gun that shoots well (accurate, smooth), easy to maintain, and reliable!

Any help is appreciated!

The Axe for sure. That is a great marker; far better than the proton.

I would pick the axe then, considering it enbodies all the things you mentioned....

Are both guns just as easy to maintain? I guess I was only considering a proton because it had such a simple design and you could oil the gun from the ASA...

Thanks for all your replies- very helpful

The proton isn't a bad little gun, but I still recommend the axe. Parts are widely available, Kee has amazing customer service and they shoot fantastic.

To me this isn't even a competition. Proton has a nicer trigger, nicer feeling in the hands, lighter, nicer shooting, and cheaper. Beats the Axe in every single category.

I couldn't disagree more about the trigger. The geometry and adjustability on the axe trigger is second to none (except maybe the old quests). As for nicer shooting, maybe stock, but with a bolt I think the axe is amazing.

My axe has a redline and infamous bolt and shoots smoother and nicer than most other high ends I've owned so its my primary gun. But here is a list of pros and cons of both guns from my perspective.

Proton...
pro:
-lighter
-easier to work on regulator if needed
-feels better in my hands as the gun is not very large
-eye shields (less hassle in cleaning if paint breaks in breech)
-cheaper new
-good simple board

Cons:
-orings and parts are not super easy to find
-some can leak due to seals needing to get worked in (easy to fix but can be disconcerting to the uninformed)

Axe...
pro:
-nicer trigger IMO
-board has more features and settings (more tournament friendly)
-with cheap simple upgrades can shoot like other high end guns (boss or lurker bolt)
-slightly better on/off system
-better efficiency on air
-Empire has a lifetime warranty on their guns

con:
-harder to work on regulator
-trigger removal is a pain
I wrote this up not too long ago on another thread. Did a little editing on the pros and cons. I own both and like both. I find both guns shoot laser beams but my axe feels like a luxe (in smoothness) with the infamous bolt installed.

That being said, at the used prices you mentioned, I would pick up the axe.

You mentioned you want the gun that is the better performer. Stock for stock they are pretty similar in smoothness and loudness. The axe will be more air efficient. But drop in one of the premium bolts, the axe is a completely different beast. The proton does not have that upgrade path. Reliability will probably be the same and maintenance the proton has a slight edge in its simplicity.

Lol

I say axe
Lets say both guns are equal? Just pick the one that has better faster friendlier customer service. The axe. And get a boss or lurker bolt

I agree with this. The axe is almost $200 more expensive, I would hope it would perform better. With that being said. for $300 new, the Proton is the best budget marker <$350. The Proton feels so well in the hands, performs well, has a great stock trigger, bolt, and board. Also a great upgrade platform.

protons are easier to maintain for the very reason its the bolt then a tiny bit through the asa and switching hands is alot easier with the proton as for shot, and kick the proton kicks more because of its weight, as for the axe it has a smoother shot but is a bit loud, but straight stock i say the proton is better because you still get the adjustable board like the axe on off just like the axe a clamping feedneck just like the axe and a better barrel dont listen to these biased people they probably never owned one, we shoot these protons in local tourneys and they are amazing! i would say you can maybe talk the guy down to like 230 just for an extra 10 in your pocket.. the axe is still a very nice marker so for these prices its 240 and be ready to [play with a reliable marker or go get an axe and have to get a 14 inch barrel
