Lightbulb 98 pump project

Sup nation!

I just wanted to let you guys know that I've started to turn my 98 into a pump. Yes, I know it's been done before. Yes, I know there's a kit available. However, I want to make it a bit more unique than what has been previously done. I'm just a normal guy with no (very) expensive tools. I'll be doing all of this work with just a drill, dremel, hand saw, and other hand tools.

I just wanted to document my progress. I'm pretty busy most of the time, and this is a project for my free time. Updates will be sporadic, so yeah! Maybe this will be a learning experience for all of us haha.

Honestly, I don't know if I'll even ever finish this

Long term goals:
  • Improve efficiency
  • Closed bolt pump mechanism
  • Mag fed
  • Self contained means no ugly remote lines. I want to be able to shoot left handed when I need to.
  • Maybe if I want to get really fancy, try to make it stock class compatible. Maybe mod stock so I don't have to use 12 grams.

My progress so far:
  • Blocked off the blowback valve
  • Smoothed down the valve pin

Short term goals:
  • Design mag feed system
  • Make a mag
  • Finish cutting out hole for mag feed

I'll take some pictures tomorrow of what I have so far. Maybe draw out some designs too. As of right now, I'm just operating off of thoughts in my head. Unprofessional. I know

Wow! I'm surprised that anyone even noticed my thread lol. Thanks! Maybe it'll keep me motivated to keep working on it. Cool pic Jack! I wanted to make a cleaner looking mod, so hopefully an internal cocking rod, but yeah! That's the basic idea.

Here's the pics I promised!

Cut down the valve pin

Filled in the blowback hole

Got a lighter valve spring

Cut down the powertube

Filled in the vertical asa space

and started cutting out the front to make space for the mag. Yeah, its really ugly, but thats because when my dremel runs out of batteries (I'm not even using a wired dremel), I started cutting it by hand with a metal file. This part has by far taken me the most time so far.

So far, it does shoot. I've eliminated the blowback, so I have to manually recock for every shot. No leaks... yet.. Progress! Next, I want to keep cutting out the hole in the front, and maybe make a new, lighter hammer. I'm thinking maybe plastic with metal in the important parts. I'll draw it out for you guys next time.

It's pretty easy. In order, this is what I did:

1. Epoxy the hole. Try not to get too much on the bottom.
2. Smooth down the valve pin with a drill and dremel
3. Drill the epoxy right in the middle using 1/8" bit. Dremel it to be just a bit bigger so the valve pin can just barely fit in.
4. Sand epoxy flush with the valve body.

If you still want me to do it, send me a PM. Maybe we can work something out. Keep in mind that I'm pretty busy. Especially this week because I have a midterm on thursday. Turn around time will be unbearably slow.

Not like im in any hurry, ive had this M98 since late July and it hasnt been touched since.

Hmm, I might try that. I have an extra valve housing somewhere, I bet I can do it. What drill size was it?

If I fail though, im coming for ya lol. Thats some top notch work.

Lol thanks man. I bet you can do it too. I believe in you. Maybe when I get more time, I'll ask for that valve so I can add more pictures, and you can have a blocked valve .

Now that I think about it, that "informative" post was not that informative. I'll update it

It looks good so far. If you finish it I might just have to buy a cheap 98C off craigslist and make my own off your design. You said one of your goals was to remove air lines and make it streamlined. It made me think of this gun (post 700):

http://www.pbnation.com/showthread.p...7#post67880217

If you wanted to use 12 grams I think that would look nice with your design. And you might be able to use a lever changer instead so it's easier to remove the 12 grams.

Also, are you thinking of making a purely vertical mag (like a conventional style magazine), or try something like a DSG were the balls are fed in horizontally through a tube under the barrel? I think the later would give a lower profile and get in the way less.

Lol wow that guy hella cheated! He just popped on a 12 gram changer. Where does the paint go??

Anyway, to answer your question, I'm planning on making a horizontal feed tube. I guess the secret is pretty much out. I'm planning in making this baby look like a shotgun. I'm playing with a few ideas in my head about how to reload, but hopefully it will be as cool as I imagine.

I'm at a little but of a dilemma though. Do I go all out and make it look like a shotgun? Or do I keep it low profile and practical? Right now I'm leaning toward shotgun, because I already have a few, practical, low profile guns haha

Well a shotgun should be pretty low profile already, don't you think? It's hopperless, has no back stock or tank so you can move freely with it, and it's basically just a rectangle in shape since it won't have a magazine or anything sticking out the bottom.

Make the gun work practically first, and after it's functioning how you want it to, then you can change the physical appearance to resemble a shotgun.

Those are some wise words my friend. You're right, and that's what I'm gonna do.

My main concern with the project is the stock. I've already purchased the fore-end and the butt stock for a remington 870. I had originally hoped that I could just pop it in, however, I think the gun would just be too long that way. Also, the stock is a bit far back to reach the trigger like a shotgun should. That means I have two options. Either move the trigger back, which would be a lot of work, or cut down the body which would be even more work, but shorten the overall profile, and make it feel better.

We'll burn that bridge when we get to it. My main concern right now is just to get the feed tube and pump arm the way I want it.

Ha, I wanted to turn my M98 into a Shotgun too.

How is your mag system gonna work I was just thinking PVC with a follower like TPX mags and using a Trracer pump arm with a collapsible stock. Kind of like an M1014.

I ordered some thin walled clear pvc. Its not going to be super special, but will have a unique "feature" which I'm planning on surprising you guys with. It won't be a mag in the sense that it will be removable, but more like a shotguns feed tube, where it needs to be loaded on the fly

Be sure to post pics when you do, cause I want to do that as well.

What capacity are you going for?
