I think the biggest thing holding 50 cal paintall's evolution back is the lack of a decent, truly reliable rental marker. I know there are many field owners who have expanded their offerings to the public by offering a 50 caliber option to their rental groups, but they all complain about the reliability of current 50 caliber markers available to them.
If there were a 50 caliber equivalent like the Tippmann 98 or even the new GOG ENMey, there would be many more fields interested in expanding paintball using 50 caliber. It will be interesting to see if one of paintball's manufacturing company jumps on this. Simple, reliable, relatively low cost. It shouldn't be that difficult.
True my local field lends out the spyder advancer which is a okay marker not very relibal
The 50 cal Spyder is the marker most fields use as a rental. But I don't know of a single field owner using it that wouldn't rather have something more reliable. We own a field and don't have 50 cal...yet. My biggest reason for holding off is that we are waiting for a decent rental marker.
What most fields seem to be doing is offering 50 caliber as an option for their private rental groups. In those groups, ALL players would be using 50 caliber. The advantage of using 50 caliber in that way is that it attracts a demographic that might otherwise not participate in paintball at all. It seems to be working for fields that are doing it.
Yes from what i can see at my local field is there offering it to the younger players so they dont get a huge welt and do not get lit up like a christmas tree

Just spoke to a field owner that offers both 50 cal and 68 cal and all but two of his groups in the past year chose 50 cal. His business also more than doubled during that year. He's very obviously very happy with giving his customers the choice of 50 cal. His biggest complaint? Lack of a good reliable rental marker.
Had another (different) field owner comment that the groups at his field that use 50 cal definitely have more fun than the groups that use 68 cal, but he won't be expanding his 50 cal fleet until a decent 50 cal rental marker becomes available.
OK marker manufacturers...there's a definite Demand for a simple, reliable semi-auto rental marker. Where is the Supply?
If there was a way to make spyders reliable, how much per gun would field owners pay to ship them off and have them converted?

Fact: a frogs ears are in its hind legs...
Experiments proved this fact, a clicker was put behind the frog, it jumped 10 feet. A hind leg was amputated, and then clicking repeated, The frog only jumped 5 feet. The second leg was removed, they clicked again, the frog didn't move proving its ears are in its legs.
For .68, no - limit is 280fps. .50 cal you can shoot 325fps.
Guess it is like Airsoft when you can shoot even higher...
The actual legal limit for .68 is around 320fps depending on the weight of the ball.
The 50 cal spyder opus all needed modifying to work on air when they arrived and the build quality is rubbish, half the screws would be loose after 1 days use, the bottom line elbow has a tendency to blow apart and the hammer dampers disintergrate.
The spyder as is just isn't ready to be used as a rental. It needs to be reworked to fix all the dumb things it does after just a little use.
