Exclamation UNDERBORING question...

I have a general kind of question about underboring paint to barrel size. I have always had a freak kit or something of the sort and just matched the paint the best I could but errored on the side of being too big of a bore than too small.
I have found a lot of information about efficiency and fps and accuracy etc. My question is how far can you under bore safely before you risk a lot of paint breakage?
I.E - can you use a .684 barrel for a paint that is .688, .690, etc?

I apologize if this has been asked before, any help, information, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I've used a .678 on paint that everyone bored around 689 and never broke a ball

it depends whether the paint you have is finnicky and if the weather is cold, but in temperate weather with good paint you can underbore pretty much until the paint doesn't come out of the barrel and not break paint.

Try to keep it less than .006 to prevent possible issues. As others have said it is paint and weather dependent but that will give you a bit of a safety margin.

I am an advocate of getting something smallbore and just running it without too much concern about the specific number. My standards are: no rollouts, can't blow out, but the ball doesn't have to be forced into the bore/doesn't "squeak" upon loading/doesn't affect pump stroke if on a pump.

The thing about an underboring "number" is that 1) balls are inconsistent often to much of that .006 figure or beyond, 2) people don't really know how to measure paint or carry the proper tools to (caliper), and 3) it's not widely known exactly what .006 underbore even means vis a vis axial measurements.

You can underbore pretty far if conditions are good. If it's 25 degrees and you're trying to shove .689 Ultra Evil into a .679 barrel yeah you're going to have issues but given how tiny paint is these days I'd be surprised if you ran into issues with a .678-.682 being too small. I shoot nothing but a .679 and have had no issues but I also don't play in super cold or super humid conditions so your mileage may vary.

do the "blow through test" and go 1-2 sizes smaller
