it APPEARS that they have a massive influx of cash - but in reality with the incredibly massive outflow of cash, striking that accord between staying alive and continuing to have tournaments versus closing down is closer than you can imagine.

So those of us who love the sport and competing have long disregarded any ROI.

PSP makes good money. it's obvious to see. It's a successful business, which means a profit, or else it wouldn't be here.

I wouldn't mind seeing a little money go for the guys in d4 to help the growth.. but that's a different argument/subject.

i dont know the finances of the league. i have a pretty good idea of some of the costs.

But what's to say they are a struggling business?

A couple years ago, Lane was calling players individually about how desperate things were. He called me personally to about the league struggles and plans to just add 3-4 more teams an event. He didn't know who I was and I was just a player ranked D3/2 who just so happened to post something about PSP.

If that were the way the real world worked, nobody would be able to fly to events.

good thing no one plays for the prizes because these are total garbage. I mean really? free entry is the prize for all the lower divisions? and the top divisions payouts make literally no sense (relative to eachother not so much the actual cash amounts)

with all of these companies sponsoring the PSP you would think that they might atleast have gear, paint, OR SOMETHING to show that actual thought or consideration went into rewarding a win. We all play just for respect and because we love the sport. But the seriously weak prizes reflect the psp's end all consideration for the players. Which is nein, Unless your Pro????

either way I don't care, we get what we pay for which is a (Mostly) properly run, competitive tournament. But it would be nice for the PSP to at least act like they care about the lower divisions that devote their time and money to coming to and playing these events. Whether it be with ref's who know what their doing on the lower div. fields, or maybe some paint bullets and a nice new pair of goggles or whatever it may be from the sponsors of the league.... Giving nothing except entry to the tournament as reward for a win, sends a not so forgiving message.... Obviously receiving nothing in return for winning a lower division that is filled with players that "aren't good enough for anyone to want to pay to watch" is a weaker alternative to the current reward (just in case you wanted to say that i figured i would make it redundant)

I'm pretty sure the D1 vs. D2 issue is a typo and the amounts are reversed. About to see PSP staff and will ask for sure.

If you are serious whining about the prizes for the lower ranks don't play if you don't like them plain and simple. I would kill for the chance to play down in Dallas prizes or not, I actually find joy in playing paintball. With that said I would also value a plaque on my wall showing how much *** I kicked that day higher then any of the cash prizes ($$ is just an added bonus), let's be honest here if you plan to make a living playing paintball you should probably pick another sport.

That's great, but we don't play darts. To play darts you need about 30 square feet of floor and a dart board. To play paintball you need about 40,000 square feet of grass, referees, netting, compressed air.... so the costs to compete are high to begin with.

No matter what, the league has to charge enough to cover the costs of running the tournaments. The question is, for most D4 teams, would they rather pay $2,600 for a smaller prize package, or $3,600 for a larger one?

Based on PSP's record attendance, the answer pretty clearly appears to be smaller prize package. The players have voted with their wallets.

BTW, all those players go to compete with no chance at making money for the same reason 98% of people play sports.

And the reason you don't get a big prize package for playing D4 is the same reason you're not an NFL player. You're not good enough for anyone to want to pay money to see you play.

- Chris
So I must of missed it, explain why the Challengers bracket, D1, and D2 get prizes but D3 and D4 do not?? I would think those 3 would also fall under that same reason... But hey kudos to them for not being good enough to beat Houston Heat either but still being able to get prizes, honestly jealous.

I think people are under valuing the half off and free entry fees.
In 2010 we took 2nd in Chicago which saved us half of our cup fee and then 1st at cup which paid our 2011 Chicago fee. That felt like success was paying our way. That and a couple of medals last longer than a couple hundred bucks would have.

How can you consider free and half off entry as not getting a prize? Would like to hear the "logic" behind that statement..

If you expect to gain more money then spent, specially with the services you are provided, you need a serious math/economics lesson.. and if you expect that in d4, you may need a mental health evaluation

You win, you get to play the next event for a much cheaper price... Man that sucks

You act as if the prizes changed from 2012.. edit for what you were referring too

I'm not even going to touch on the first point lol...

As far as the second point, Ill break this down for you.. Division 4, considered by many the 'future' of the sport. The majority of tournament level paintball players, are probably ranked 'd4.' So, does making the reward for success greater, or the events more profitable for these teams to play, would that not encourage more d4 teams to attend a national events, thus expanding the sport?

There are many d4/d3 teams in the world, more than d2 and up, rewarding this group would only result in growth. Simple.

Doesn't this whole conversation come up EVERY SINGLE YEAR?!

Let's make this simple: If the lack of prizes piss you off so much, don't play. Period. It'll just be fewer teams for me to beat, and I play for the fun and the bragging rights.

So long as teams keep playing, the PSP has no motivation to change the prize package, so I am not sure what all the arguing is hoping to accomplish.

I hope that wasn't directed towards me... If so, read what I am saying.

The prizes do not piss me off what-so-ever. I literally want Lane to be a millionaire and for the sport to flourish. I simply see a lot of positives to higher prize package or cheaper cost for the d4 division, and it's not simply just so those guys can win more.
