I like my cousins MKVI GTI. Can't say it's fast and he is throwing CELs after 15k miles with 100% on the dot factory maintenance and 3500 oil changes.
Seems to be reliability issues but it drives nice.

my 96 tdi has over 265k on it with routine maintenance and get 45+mpg so pros would be
cheap (paid 500 for the car and anther 500 when i got it to fix the clutch)
great mpg
roomy
biggest trunk i've owned
cons
slow
a few little electrical bugs (it got struck by lighting and was totaled)
but it's my daily driver

If you had a Beetle you could call it the Lightning Bug.

People are idiots, its called CORRECTLY doing routine maintenance. It will keep your vehicle running. Don't trust dealerships.

Parts arent as expensive as people claim. If you go to autozone sure. If you actually take the time to go to a junkyard with a wrecked car similar to yours. No. VWs are great Ive owned over five and love em.

don't trust the dudes who spend thousands of their own dollars on tools specific to your car, who go to school about your car 2-3 times a year and who diagnose and fix more cars identical to yours in a week than you see in a month.

An honest tech that's knowledgeable is worth their weight in good, and there's a reason for that. Plus, it's not just the mechanics, you have to go through the writers

So you're telling me you would pay twice as much for a new crank window regulator than one that is perfectly fine, and half the price? That makes no sense. If you know the part is good why would you throw extra cash away? Hell, you could even buy something like a carb, and rebuild it with a new rebuild kit for half the price of a new one. The only reason parts are expensive on VW's is because they are European. BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche are the same way.

if you treat your car right and do the proper maintenance it will treat you right, simple as that...to everyone saying they are ****ty and unreliable makes me wonder what you drive and if you have ever even owned a vw

Ive owned a MK4 gti vr6 and my current DD is a MK4 R32 love both cars to death, that being said the early mk4 golf and jettas have some electrical gremlins thats for sure. But if you take care of them they will treat you right.

welp just drove my mom's 03 Passat the other day while my buick was apart fixing a few dents on the fender and cleaning an oddly large amount of corn seeds from my intake.
92k and could tell the cv joints were bad as soon as I left the driveway, o2 sensor was going bad, engine vibrated like a dildo and it was out of alignment. didn't drive it long enough to see if there was anything else wrong but for all these new problems to pop up at one since the last I drove it is retty ****ty. car is well maintained. my 00 century with 76k hasn't had anything as much as a "low washer fluid" light come on and the bottom suspension/steering is way more exposed to the elements than the Passat.
our neglected blazer that has the most miles on it has had less problems and that thing is a piece
