Definitely the Axe, but with a decent barrel the cost would be a little over 500$

I really want to say the Etha just because of the great quality value you get when you buy one, and also they can easily be had for $250 used. Which leaves you with money to upgrade your gear and go out and play at your local field.

No they don't. They look like markers that have performance as the main purpose instead of useless bolt-ons.
If you're going to ask for the best marker for $500 or less, you're going to get all recommendations for performance markers, not overly heavy blowbacks that have a dozen useless bolt-ons that add weight and add not 1 iota of performance.

There is no "hands down best gun" in any price range and you were rather quick to shoot down the (very good) options people posted.
If you know what you want why bother asking? You can drop $500 on some milsim'd out Tippmann but it will be heavier, louder, less air efficient, have a slower rof, and kick harder than any of the "space guns" you derided.
If you value looks over performance you seem to already have chosen what you want.

Hands down i would say Macdev Drone DX. Its efficient, smooth and only runs at 100psi. It even comes in the same case as the Clone VX.
There is a video up at youtube proving 9 pods out of 3000 psi wich is hard to beat. That was with the quad oring mod though.

You should have said you wanted milsim then, and the question should be "What's the best looking gun under $500" since milsim markers in that range pretty much all perform the same. My vote goes for the Etha. If you want to be milsim, buy the Etha's EMC kit to go along with it. Then, if you get into speedball, you aren't SOL because you have a heavy marker that's really only made for woodsball.

Why would you not want to take a space gun to a earthling military simulation? seems like a clear advantage.

Ive seen this video and Im not completely sold on it. There's a discrepancy at the beginning as to the size of the pods (100rd or 140 rd) I've emailed and pm'ed the parties involved and never got a reply. I've done the "quad mod" and was not able to duplicate their results and besides… If these orings GUARANTEED these results, more people would be doing it and I cant imagine that MacDev wouldnt have already implemented these quad rings as stock.
Ive owned a DX and for $430 you do get get a hell of a lot of marker. Add the clone board and grips for another $150 and you essentially have a high end marker for $600. I picked up my axe for $350, threw in an infamous bolt for $30 and a deathtouch barrel for another $60. You cant ask for more in either situation.
I wouldn't disqualify the axe either. It's got a great feel to it IMO which ultimately is what counts.. your own personal opnion. I think the grips feel incredible. The fore grip although awkward looking feels great to me as well. You cant really compare the two guns because it comes down to the age old debate of spool vs poppet. It comes down to what you're looking for.
Bottom line is it's your money, Im sure it didnt come easy so I'd try them out before you buy one and CERTAINLY do not buy one simply because people say X is so much better than Y. It's crap. Sorry for the long winded answer and good luck either way

This is a very well thought out response. to you.
I have to also add that Kee is off the charts fantastic and make the axe one of the best ownership experiences in the sport. An aftermarket bolt makes these night and day different and I'm really in love with the way these things shoot. I actually really like the stock trigger and ergonomics too.

Thanks Blue.. I'm a huge fan of the stock trigger as well. There isn't much I don't like about the axe so far. I'm looking forward to it breaking in and seeing how it performs then. It's not going to replace my GT but it is a blast to shoot, especially with the mods I've already listed.
