Look in the B/S/T. There are plenty of markers in that price range there, you might have to do a little searching though.

Or even a envy.....It is tournament leveled entry but you put a few hundred on it and you have a full out tournament grade marker.

Refurbished Markers are available from the manufacturers of Spyder Tippman and others for very reasonable prices like $50-60 .
Skip the CO2 tank for an air supply Your accuracy will be compromised and there is no fix except moving to High Pressure Air. But if your budget has to go there, used 20 oz Co2 are a dime a dozen in the $15-20 range.
Better off buying a used 68-3000 High Pressure Air for $60. Your local rental field probably sells them. It is quite common for them to sell them when they are 1 year old for that price because they can buy a new one wholesale for that price. The just roll over their tank inventory and have NO maintainence or recertification issues. Hpa has to be pressure tested every three years for about $25-30. So you get 2 years to save up.
Mask $50-60 and you do NOT want anti fog because they FOG! You want a twin lens "Thermal" Like a storm window with a air gap in the middle and they CAN still fog but generally not in any kind of decent weather. My biggest problem with fogging is always the night game at a scenario. RARELY during the day.
A motorized hopper is nice but not required. Non motorized for $5. You do not need one that will force feed 20 balls a second into your marker. A simple JT Revolution is fine. $50-60 NEW.
There we got your gear that will shoot better than you do for the next 5 years for $200-225. Learn how to point a shoot before you get a marker upgrade. I still have the spyder that is 20 years old. Another 15 years old. One is in my scenario tank and the other is my backup marker for when my super duper electropneumatic marker goes down on me at a scenario game 500 miles from my house. I am NOT happy with my super duper at all. So far, NOT reliable at all.
I haul a $15 rebuild kit for my spyders. Nothing I can't fix at an away game like that.

Azodin Kaos on paintballgateway.com for $60. Get a proto primo, 48/3000 tank and a good mask around $60-100 and you'll be set.

Or the OP can pick up a Palmers Stab for about $60 and never have issues. Best C02 reg around.
Might as well pick up a reg if he is serious about PBing.
Do the older crowd a favor and stay away from SmartParts products. Sure they are cheap but pick up something that will last you and you can learn the game with. A Uber gun is no replacement for hard earned skills.

Sp1
You can get a good gun for that price. My suggestion would be the SP1 from ANSgear. Its a $200 gun your getting for 125 and its brand new. Also its easy to upgrade if needed and your getting a marker you can play with a long time before you need to upgrade. You can get a refurbished spyder for less but the SP1 is in another class as a marker.
I got a refurbished spyder a while back they are a great bargain just remember you are going to have to spend another $20 on a batter and charger.
You can get good deals off CL or ebay but often your going to get markers that need a little work, have leaks and are missing things like detents. If your new you dont want to deal with that.

Listen to the rest and get the Azodin Blitz. Great electronic marker for a starter like myself, add a good loader such as the Halo Too and you'll be set. Be sure to get any HPA tank for it though, Co2 will tear up the internals pretty good, it's worth the extra cash in the long run.

Paintballgateway.com currently is out of stock on their Blitz markers, looks like they're hot... The Zenith would push your budget, but with the zero recoil system, on/off ASA, and 2 piece barrel you'd be set. Great stock parts, I'd say a new feed neck would be smart but it ain't necessary. It isn't much of an upgrade from the Blitz, but it's a good deal if you were considering the Zenith and you're picky about the details

What is with this upgrade stuff? Tournament level marker? Etc. Etc.
He is a BEGINNER. Any marker he buys will shoot better that he does for years.. He needs to learn how to point and shoot. When to move, when NOT to move. When to push and attack. When to be defensive. How to be a team players. When to support other players. The best super duper marker made can't make him a better player.
Then HE might be interested in tournament play or scenario play, or decide he wants to spend his money on fast cars and fast girls rather than fast paintball markers.
Don't over do it...

I was under the impression that was his budget for all his gear. or was that JUST for the Marker?

I got my first Tippmann A-5 with a pod pack, a bunch of pods, a few Co2 tanks, and mask used on ebay for $130. (they spelled "tipman" instead of Tippmann).
I still have it, and it gets used everytime I play by other players. (I got a "newer" A-5 in realtree factory camo).
Great gun, shoots fast, simple to clean and work on, and doesn't use batteries if you get the regular one. Works on air or co2.
You can often find them on craigslist for cheap too!

Is that $200 for just your marker, or your whole setup? The biggest thing you need to invest in is a good mask. I'm a fan of the proflex http://www.ansgear.com/Jt_ProFlex_Th...proflexred.htm (they come in other colors too). If your budget is $200 for just a marker though, Search around on the B/S/T and see what kind of deals you can find. Maybe go to the field and see if you can try out some other people's markers to see which feel you like the best. You can't go wrong with just a 98 Custom for a first marker. But if you want an electro, you could get a Mini, g4, or PMR just to name a few.

As some other people have said, go to town on the mask, buy the most expensive one you can get, it's worth it.
