For starters, many positions that look right don't feel comfortable for the model at all. It takes a lot of getting used to for them, and is why so many new models look so uncomfortable. That's all part of learning their side of the work. What I do, is every time I see a portrait or pose I like, I screencap it and put it in a folder. Every so often I take it all and sync it into a photostream that I can call up on my iPhone or iPad. That way, I can go through it with a client/model and find the looks we both like, and assist them in getting contorted into those poses. In some cases, the pose just isn't compatible with a subject's physique and you have to move on to something else, just stay within the general rules of posing women and void the distinct no-no's and you'll be fine.
It helps too when you're not working with your wife. For some reason, there's women out there that take an issue with you having a readily available collection of photos of other women in various clothing (or lack thereof) and poses. Or, they'll object to you putting them in the same poses.
*EDIT* Almost forgot, don't ever have a model actually lean their face on their hands or whatever, just have them act like it. That way, you get the look of them doing it without the contorted skin/face look of actually resting their weight on their hands.

That's pretty much what I did for that shot, that's why it's called copycat lol. I found a photo I really liked and copied it exactly. The not putting weight on the hand never struck me and is an excellent idea. I think my issue was I had her hand too far forward. Looking at the shot I copied, the hand was further back.

1 benefit of working here.
I've played with so many 5D3's it's not even funny. 1 D800, a D3S and a 1DX 2 days ago.
Why the hell someone brought a 1DX to a Disney park, I have no idea..

I'm surprised you're saying she looks umcomfortable and her wrist looks unnatural. That's where she kept going to BE comfortable lol. I have no ****ing idea how to retouch skin.
I'm not throwing a ***** fit, but I do think you're being overly harsh or what I was trying to convey didn't make it through. I was highlighting the shape of her body, and if you look at the lighting, I did exactly that. The spotty lighting and shadows are a result of all of her curves. I feel they add a lot of depth. Usually I'm highly critical of my stuff and I'm just not seeing it here.
|
I don't mean to be harsh, just being completely honest. I don't have the built in bias towards the model and can look at your work objectively. Which is exactly what I did.
My intent isn't to insult or degrade your work, but help you to see flaws that you may overlook.
I would be happy to PM you more detailed critique and my suggestions on how to improve the image if you'd like.

Stos, I love 1 and 4.
Saw a photo friend here in Anaheim walking with a group of other photographers (learning photographers), and a model. Asked her if I could get a quick portrait on their way out. Took like 3 shots, and left. But now I have a new portrait. Opinions? (facebook quality, because that's the only place she uploads them.) I really want to ask her for the raw file to process it myself, I'm not a fan of her processing.
Slightly OOF ftl.
