I'd like a bit of guidance if any of you techs can help me…

Car: 2005 Saturn Ion 2.2l automatic

Problem: car ran over rock, destroyed at least the transmission pan.

Now, I'm not sure if anything else was damaged, but assuming not, I'll need to change the pan and gasket. Any general pitfalls I should watch out for, or does anyone feel like giving me a general outline of what I need to do?

Thanks for any replies. If you have any questions, please ask.

Uh, not a tech but be very careful tightening all the bolts when you put it back on. Look up a diagram how to do it, you usually hand tighten all of them, and do some sort of criss cross method. I've heard you do the inside bolts first before the outside bolts, so it doesn't bind the gasket. Put a very thin film of oil soluble grease, like typical chassis grease, onto the gasket to keep it in place when you're putting the pan back on.

Also use a gasket, don't just use RTV like I did for some ****ing stupid reason once. Make absolutely sure you're using the right kind of ATF. It's not like the engine where most/any motor oil would suffice.

It's not too expensive to just do what you're doing for now, so I'd just do that and drive it to see if it's fine otherwise unless you have something obviously wrong underneath the car. It didn't screw up any of the axles or shear off any bolts when you hit that rock?

Thanks for the reply.

I really only have one question left for anyone that knows this tranny... It's the GM 4t45 and I know I'm supposed to fill it idling in park until it starts to come out the auto level? Where is this auto level? And what exactly is it? Is it just a bolt I need to remove from somewhere on the tranny?

And no luckily it damaged nothing but the tranny pan…there's a lip on it and it just caught it enough to pull the pan from the gasket.

If it did that much I would think it would have damaged the body/threads of the transmission where the pan bolts into. Good luck to you.

Nope. The lip on the pan goes down, away from the rest of the car. And where it hit there was no bolt. I thought there was, but it was just an alignment nub on the gasket itself. Further back it pulled down an edge on a heat shield or something. That was the only damage to the car.

5.7 vortec , hooker headers, magnaflow exhaust, k/n cai, PCMforless mail order tune. 130k miles.

Intake gaskets had been replaced twice, last time being about two years ago.

The issue I'm having is the truck feels like its misfiring under load. More so in high gear around 60mph. No engine light, no codes, no flashing light.

I've checked fuel pressure, was around 56psi I believe. I checked all the wires, checked the cap and rotor ( new last summer , make 5 k on them). Spark plugs look fine, touch of black on them. Nothing wet or oily. ( replace about 5k ago also)
No exhaust leaks, header bolts tight, nothing appears loose under the valve covers. Distributor is tight and set to 0* as per spec.

I have hptuners and took a log file. It appears the knock sensor is sensing up to 4-5* of knock and pulling timing in correlation with the misfire feeling. Tried running high grade premium fuel ( believe it was 96) and it still does the same thing.

This only recently started happening in the past 2 months and seems to be getting worse.

Suggestions welcome

How are you checking the timing? I would remove the tune and see if the problem persists

With hptuners . I'm not checking physical timing, but as far as I know you don't check it that way on the vortec.

I don't have the stock tune, the tuned PCM has been on with for 3 years without issue until the past couple months.

I noticed when it's doing this and bucking like a horse, if I just touch the brake it clears up instantly. Touching the brake unlocks the converter, does it not?

Torque converter lockup solenoid, or something along those lines?

good then your checking the timing correctly, If you think it is a converter issue, monitor the TCC and see if its ramped up when your problem occurs.

I haven't had a chance to go out and check it, but yesterday it started doing this miss/ shudder feeling in all gears.

If I put it in 4 high, brake to the floor and bring the Rpms up, it will start popping/ shuddering pretty excessively. Pretty sure it's a misfire now.

I

Guys wheel fell off on a chevy 3500 with the duramax, we set jackstands under the rear end but once the tow truck let it down our lift couldnt pick it up.

ended up having to cut most of the studs off to get the rotor off, only to find out that theres no way to get the studs out without taking the parking brake off, so I went this route

Ended up using my new brake piston tool, works pretty good actually.

Got it all back together, only to find out NAPA brought us the wrong studs, so I get to do it all over again tomorrow.

I hate dealing with HD and Large trucks. Everything is just 10x more difficult and a pain in the ***. I'd rather work with the small intricate things on the Audi's at work than a behemoth, lol.

It was a hell of alot easier than putting an alternator in an Infinti J30, marked that up as a never again kind of deal.

The smallest socket I had to use on the Chevy was a 18mm lol. We ran the studs in with a ball joint press.
