Question Taking a tank on airline need advice

I am leaving to Europe soon and I am debating if I should take a tank from here which would be cheaper. Or looking for one at my final destination which is a hassle. I know that when you take a tank you have to take the reg off. My big concern is putting it on if it will be tight enough and that it won't shoot off or something. Or i could leave the reg on the tank and leave it in the luggage would anything happen? Please give advice.

Yes, you need to take the reg off.

As for it being tight enough when you put it back on....it will. Remember that there is going to be 3000 to 4500 psi pushing on that reg with the threads holding it in place. As long as you get it as tight as you can hand-tightening, it should be just fine. Using a strap wrench would be better though but at any rate, as long as the o-rings are fine, it shouldn't leak when reassembled.

Okay, if you're going to be hand tightening it remember to unscrew it by holding onto the REG and NOT holding onto the tank.

Make sure you get it as tight as you possibly can and check it throughout the day to make sure you're not unscrewing it at all.

If your tank is not PI certified you will not be able to use it over in Europe. So it may not even be worth taking over since no field will legally fill it for you and they are very strict on their laws over in Europe.
So if you have only a DOT/TC certified cylinder, leave it at home. You can't use it.

You're welcome.
DOT certification is for the USA.
TC is for Canada.
PI is for Europe/Asia.
The only US companies I know that have PI certifications are Ninja and Dye. Dye has all three certificates on all their cylinders now. I haven't seen the newest Ninjas so I am unaware if they carry all three certificates on the cylinder now or if the PI certified cylinders are seperate. Perhaps one of their reps can chime in if they see this thread.

Hopefully... I will take a look into ninja and see if they have PI certifications.

I know they do I'm just unaware if it's on all their cylinders or just for cylinders being manufactured for the European/Asian market.

It may not be a hassle though you would probably pay out the nose for one once you did the conversion to US dollars. Like a Stako tank is pushing $200-$250+ last time I checked.

Just remember, if you buy one over there and it's PI only you can't legally use it over here either.
I would contact Ninja on monday and see how to go about it and what they can do. Unless you can get a Dye tank but they are much more expensive in comparison because of the name and the triple certificate.

I just checked out Stako and I don't understand their sizing. What I mean there is no 45/4500 its based on colors??

The sizing of European/Asian tanks is based on the metric system. So you have to go by the Liter size.
Also Stakos take several fills over several minutes to fill properly do to the expansion and contraction of the fiber layers. You can't slam fill them like you're more then likely used too. Air needs to bleed out from between the layers and it needs to be filled half way, then you have to wait about 5-10 minutes then finish filling it. And as I mentioned before, they're incredibly expensive. Not to mention they're only good for five years and then you throw it out. Yeah... throw it out. You can't hydro test a Stako.
Getting a PI certified Ninja tank is probably the cheapest route. Followed by the Dye tank route. Getting a Stako is probably the most expensive choice. The decision is up to you in the end, I'm just trying to give you the information to base your decision on.
