I disagree. Having gone through he same dilemma and ended up choosing the mini because the grip, and in particular the trigger guard, was far more comfortable. The trigger guard of the Axe bit into my fingers of the trigger hand. The mini has a more rounded profile and fits my grip better. If I want to wrap my off-hand thumb around the board and opposed to laying it up on the barrel, I simply put on the extender.

For reference, I am 6'2" and can palm a basketball. I am also more used to shooting 1911's in Bullseye competition, so I may use a stronger than necessary grip.

You know what, I would say Mini in this situation, but since he actually has experience and looks like he's going to be paintballing far into the future, I would go with the Axe.

One thing I noticed was the Mini had enough space below it's trigger guard for 3 fingers when shooting with 1 finger. The Axe is very cramped when wrapping 3 fingers around the frame because the trigger guard is huge.

So, in the end, I got him a GOG eXTCy. We also formed a Young Guns team for CPL. We play our first tournament this Saturday at CPX in Joliet. The team name is ROTTEN KIDS.

LOL i was just going to say, he doesn't "need" an axe or a mini just to compete persay. But seems you've figured out this much on your own now.

Yeah, you're right. I was willing to get him a DangerousPower G5, but because he heard a few people say that all DPs leaked, he didn't want that. Since his G1 has been pretty reliable, we decided on the eXTCy. Saved some money there and spending more on team outfitting.

I recommend the axe, I played with my buddies axe for a game instead of my mini and I prefer the axe.
But then again i'm 6'4" so maybe that helps lol.

As far as shooting they were about the same, the on/off asa is a nice feature to have though.

Axe!

Get the axe. If he gets the mini, he will probably like it, but after a while that will die down. The axe however is a great gun, i've owned it and loved it. It by far is the best shooting gun for the price you pay
