The thing with active pickups is that they really defeat the guitar's natural shape and construction from playing a role in the tonal shape and timbre of tthe instrument. An EMG on a Tele is going to sound like an EMG on damn near every other guitar out there.

Passive pickups are much more transparent and bring out the quality of the guitar's construction. A guitar like a Telecaster is signified by its structure and its tonal quality is exactly what has given it its level of popularity. It's a bright, chimey sound with a lot of gritty glass character in it; a very sought-after sound and understandably so. Putting EMGs on it just ruins the entire purpose of the guitar. It just doesn't make any sense to put those pickups on a guitar that was made for a very specific sound that sits on the other end of the spectrum.

Also, big black boxes on such a delicately designed guitar just looks bad.

And yet, people use them, get the tones they want from them, and are very happy with the results.

Again, just because you don't like them be it sonically, asthetically, whatever, it doesn't make them bad, just not what you're looking for.

I wouldn't buy a tele that's made to historical spec, or with the typical woods, I hate that sound, I hate the sound of single coils, so I'd never buy a typical tele or strat, it's not my bag.

But, I'd sure as hell buy a mahogany bodied tele with dual HB, and if I didn't get the tone I wanted from the pickups installed from factory, I'd try something else, and more than likely I'd go with EMGs, because I actually like the way they sound.

It makes them useless and the people who use them will be scoffed at. I have every right to think the way I do. No less than you do. The difference is, I see the value in the idea over gawking at a culmination of a mish-mashed end product.

People like to kill other people and are happy with the results. Does this mean I shouldn't tell them it's an improper thing to do?

What would be the benefits of putting EMG's in a Tele over anything else, other than cosmetics? Unless you REALLY like the feel of a Tele's neck over literally all other guitar choices out there, because that's seriously the only difference the guitar is going to make.

I'm not going to tell a murderer not to murder, or else I would be murdered, too.

You gonna scoff at David Gilmour? Pretty sure he's still and EMG endorser.
Devin Townsend, Prince, Steve Winwood, Vernon Reid, Victor Wooten?

The list goes on, man.

All those people, phenomenal players, fantastic careers, and you're going to say they're scoffed at?

Get over it, man. People have different tastes. Your god Tosin Abasi was an EMG endorser before Dimarzio gave him his own signature set, he may have said he didn't like actives, but that didn't stop him from sucking the active man's dick for some money and notoriety.

And again, I'm not saying one's better than the other, I'm just saying people's preferences are different, there's no need to get into a rage about it.

Show them or Tosin playing EMGs on a Tele or even a Strat for that matter. EMGs have their purpose. That purpose just doesn't fit with Telecasters (nor Stratocasters), which have an entirely different purpose.

BTW, I actually quite like EMG's on bass guitars.

I don't think you get it. He's not denying the usefulness of EMG's.

He's saying that putting them in a Tele would be NO DIFFERENT than putting them in literally any other guitar out there, especially when a Telecaster's sound comes from an entirely different means than active pickups operate under.

*EDIT* **** he beat me.

Anyone ever used Bareknuckles? I'm thinking of swapping the SD's in my Thinline out for something different. The bridge sounds decent, but the neck pickup just doesn't have anywhere near the sharpness I want (the Agile has spoiled me).

edit: forgot to say, I've been looking at the Aftermath's a bit.

Tosin and a super strat?

David Gilmour and his Black EMG equipped Strat (at least I think it is, looks like it.)

I found an amazing deal on a Jackson DK2M w/ case. If it's still available in a couple of weeks it will be mine.

Try the new FL tremolo, supposedly they aren't machined as smooth and some have thread issues (trem bar and fine tuners). Not sure how true it is since I haven't tried one, just passing it on.

Trade my Squier Strat for an acrylic bodied Flying V-style guitar.... Tempting. The Squier was just going to be a project anyways but I have a buddy who wants the V and I can trade him for another parts guitar.

if it's glued in a lot.

if it's bolt on, not a lot.

Just tell him to take #0000 steel wool to the back of it for a minute and see if he likes it.
