Most tournaments use the APPA, a ranking system. Make an account on www.paintball-players.org. You will be ranked at beginner, or D6. Start out at D6 tourneys if there are any around you. If not, then go for D5/D4 tourneys.

"So anyways, I was standing there waiting to use the pay phone."
"Yeah, he was, seriously."
"And this guy who was on the phone, turns around and tips his hat like this."
"And who do you think that guy was?"
"Divisio Estevez. "
"The Mighty Duck man, I swear to God, I was there."
"Of course you were, you were the one who yelled the Breakfast Clubber's name."
I was like, "DEVISIO!!!"
... I'll show myself the door.
But seriously, D4 should be fine with some practice.

No, not necessarily. You have to do well in order to rank up. I think APPA drops your best event, than counts your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th best event.

Start in D4. It's better to come in knowing you need work than to go slap around some kids playing paintball for the second time in their lives and think you're the ****, only to get stomped by a real team when you move up to the next division. Thinking more long term, you don't want other teams to associate you with D5. They'll take a bad D4 player before they take a "good" D5 player because the D4 player stepped up to the plate and the D5 player beat up on walk ons.

Yep, otherwise I'd be 3 points under D4 ranking instead of 58 (Although, with one practice for my second ranked tournament with a few teammates that couldn't care less...)

Play D5 for an event or two, then make the jump. D5 is really good for helping you get your bearings, and get back in to the groove of tournament play. Not somewhere you want to be for too long though.
