Mine obviously! It's a big one for travels but a monster on the paintball field.
The d90 is outdated, I'm not a nikon guy, just a preference but all the rebels are light and reliable. Stay away from the 5200 and 3200 they will hold you back the more you get into shooting.

The d7000 would be a better choice than than the d90 in terms of Nikon selection. Check around, as with the release of the D600, the d7000 prices have dropped significantly

Don't buy a Nikon base model, they're crap until you get into the higher prices. Canon rebel t3i gets my vote.

D7000 is probably your best bet into Nikon, but it doesn't leave a whole lot of money for glass. On the Canon side, a used 40D plus a 28-135 IS should be within your budget and give you a good start.

I wouldn't go for anything below a D7000. Canon may be your best choice

Canon t3i (maybe t2i if that has video?) with kit lens and 50 1.8 lens if you need a camera with video,
Or a canon 30d or 40d with a tamron 17-50 2.8 if you don't need video

It will do you fine. You'll outgrow the kit lens but get it anyway to start. Then get a 50mm 1.8.

The T2i does have video, 720 and 1080.
Only additions to the T2i that the T3i has are a flip out screen and wireless flash control. Neither is essential to someone just starting out.
Not exactly sure what additions they did with the T4i but with it being newer, I'd save money and put it into glass.
The T2i was my first DSLR and it definitely got the job done. I still keep it in my bag as a backup.

In terms of shooting video, the t2i is where it is at. Grab a 28-135 and you're set for a lot of different scenarios. I mix t2i footage with footage from 7D's, 60D's, 5d2/3's and GH2's all the time.. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference in quality.
a t2i and 28-135 can be had for under 500 dollars when bought used.

This and Cassidy (HK/PbFashion videos) used a T2i prior to using the RED. I don't know if he still does occasionally. Just make sure to have a high speed SD card to shoot HD or it won't work. I think it says Class 6+ for HD but I'd probably go 10 just to be safe.

I swear Canon just put a T3i badge on a T2i and resold it as that. I'd say pick up a T2i and just invest in glass.

Spend your money on lenses. If you spend all of your money on the body you are going to limit the usefulness of the camera. All modern DSLR's will take great photos. unless you are a professional you won't notice a difference in image quality between a T3 or for and a top of the line 1DX.
Not to mention lenses give you image quality. A good lens on a cheap body will outperform a good body with a cheap lens any day.
Obviously if money is not an issue buy whatever you want. But if you are looking to get into the hobby get a T3,T4 or even a used 40/50/60D and spend the rest on lenses. If you are shooting paintball you will need something relatively long like a 55-250, or 70-200 or 70-300. You may be able to get by with an 18-135. I have it and it is pretty nice for a kit lens.
