Only it hasn't been debunked. On the whole more companies does equal more competition. The way economies and products are advancing just adds more variables into the mix, not erasing variables(like amount of companies) from the equation.
Certain products take a set initial investment to be produced which prohibits some companies from selling at a low cost. If you have more companies, all of the same size, you will get more competition and decreased prices.
The main controlling variable in this situation is size of the company, and with its increased size its ability to utilize greater marketability and cheaper wholesale costs. Putting one monster company in a field mostly populated by smaller shops will vastly change how those variables come into play but to say that more companies does not equal more competition, and to say that more competition will not decrease prices is extremely wrong.
economics isn't some set equation, and variables don't disappear in economic theory. The variables in economics are all interlinked like a spider web with a thread leading from each intersection to the next. These points of intersection, variables, can be moved around but in doing so you change the whole landscape because each variable is interconnected with at least one, if not more variables. the analogy that it's like a rubics cube is probably more easily comprehended. Move one block and you must move another, maybe more than one block. you change one thing and the whole landscape changes slightly, but you can not remove a block because that is cheating. Just like removing the theory that more companies equals lower prices is cheating, sure it may not have a large effect anymore, and the change may be negligible, but the change is still there and to ignore it is to take the easy way out by only focusing on the most important pieces not on all of them. To remove a variable and ignore it is like only playing with your best pieces in a game of chess, sure you can win(predict the outcome of an economic event) but you have a much greater chance of winning(correctly predicting economic events) if you play with and follow all of the pieces.
