i always thought it was screwy that Cali and other states have all these animal restrictions yet they more or less embraced the spread of the invasive largemouth bass. you want to talk about devastating invasive look no further than america's sweetheart the LMB

i'm not complaining that much, i don't live there and cali bass fishing is some of the best in the world as they grow super huge and have nothing to really compete with. sucks for local natives, though

yo JC, guy posted this on reddit and its got your fish:

the ghost shrimp experiment worked in my puffer tank. i think i am going to move forward and get some crystals or amanos now. leaning towards amano shrimp as they are much cheaper and algae control (the oto's are doing nothing) in a tank i cannot have any snails in.

That tank is awesome! Is that like a coarse sand?

Also, I didn't realize you were in Jersey JC. I just assumed you were in Seattle

it is either that or ADA substrate or something.

edit: he did not put his tank specs in the reddit post but I THINK it might be a Walstad. I cannot really tell from the pic as it is pretty dark but it looks like coarse sand/small gravel over soil.

also, be thankful you live in the states. those barbs apparently cost $70 a pop in Australia

That substrate is awesome, I wonder if any of my fish would be opposed to it.

Nice, I'm about an hour away from you and I go up that way a few times a month.

That tank I'm trying to buy comes with about a dozen adult cichlids (as well as a dozen various aged cichlids) which I do not need. I called the local specialty store, they are VERY excited and would love to buy them from me. Apparently adult cichlids go for quite a pretty penny. I figure this could be a good way to build a solid relationship with this store.

probably the best shop in south jersey, if not all of jersey. read a lot of north jersey people head there, or philly.

grrrr, i'll probably wait another month till purchasing a tank, to save money.

oh well, gives me more time to think about tank size and stocking ideas.

i'm still thinking the best bang would be the 60 gallon w/ stand.

i just want some denison barbs zipping around all day!

i don't like most of the rift lake cichlids. i like dwarves, talapia, discus, pikes and a few other SA species (jags and Pbass in particular). pike cichlids are my favorites followed closely by shell dwellers and comps (Dimidiochromis compressiceps). if i had the space i would have a bunch of these:

also, these are the comps i like. such a flashy fish when mature

I didn't know that either, that's cool.

Cichlids don't interest me. I'd surely like to sell them though

yep, a very delicious cichlid. oscar is supposedly pretty tasty too. Tilapia buttikoferi is one of my favorites. they are aggressive as all hell, though.

neon tetras have some crazy *** relatives too. african tiger fish, piranha, golden dorado, payara and wolf fish just to name a few.

im sure there are a few out there that you would like. check out pikes, discus or some of the dwarf species. shell dwellers are also pretty interesting. angels are also cichlids.

so i'm thinking if i go with the 60 gallon, my stocking list will look something like - denison barb (5), false julii cory (6), red tailed black shark (1).

that's like an 83% stocking level according to AQAdvisor.

that is not bad but you could add more with good filtration, plants, etc. watch the shark though, they could be aggressive towards the denisons (i doubt you will have an issue, honestly).

Cichlids are neat, and the variety is cool, but I wouldn't trade my Bichirs or knifefish for them.

maybe add a 6th barb? i'll probably end up using 2 penguin 200b biowheel filters and lots of live plants.

i think the barbs actually grow 1/2" larger than the shark.

i have a thing for the color red by the way.

you could do that or add another species if you want. i prefer overstocked community tanks but that is just me. my 20gal is like double stocked right now and all the parameters are in check although i will get slight nitrate spikes occasionally if i am not careful with feeding. i have a pretty solid clean up crew in there outside the plants. 2x flower shrimp, an undisclosed number of blue tiger shrimp (i never see them, kinda sucks), MTS and random pond snails. also have a school of salt and pepper corys and 3 oto cats.

the snail population has been dropping a lot since ive been taking the smaller ones and feeding them to my puffers. i might throw 2 zebra nerite snails in if i completely nix the pond snail population

sweet! i'll probably just add another denison then.

i think i'll have a nice little set up once completed. might not see much of the corys but the shark should make an appearance, and the denisons from what i've read should be very active.
