My family on my mother's side came from share cropping in south Texas. I would not wish the hours, the conditions, or labor on anyone.
My great grand parents sacrificed their entire lives in the fields so that my grandmother and her brothers and sisters could leave it when they were old enough to join the army, marry into the army, or work on other ranches.
I'd caution how easily someone may suggest slavery or indentured servitude is the solution for anything. Opportunity is the solution to poverty, and opportunity is a very difficult, often time sensitive solution to peg down.

Please see my last post for a clarification of poverty. I think it would accurately answer where I think opportunity would take most of the poor. I do not consider it merely a matter of wealth.
The hours and conditions of many free factory workers were also horrible and deplorable. Still are in many parts of the world. This is by no means an issue related only to slavery and indentured servitude

This is a huge disservice to the host population who built the civilization because of the gradual lowering of quality for all. This is the essence of poverty.
Obviously any good natured man would grant freedom to all who do not display evidence of these behaviors.

I have a hard time figuring you out. One day you say that trancendentalism is the most important idea to come out of western thought, and the next you say that people should be slaves to save them from their own poverty?
I think putting down the books and doing some traveling would suit you well.

Transcendentalism was the purest cultural expression of "America" to date, important to this continent not all of th west. I don't have to agree with it entirely to make that observation either.
I have no desire to travel other than relocating to a greener, isolated, and undesirably rural area.
I understand that slave is a very loaded word but there is a positive context to what I am saying here.

You want to get to the Americas? Work for me for 5 or 6 years.

I believe there is an amendment against it.
However, I would like to see it incorporated into an apprenticeship program. Come to the US legally, learn a viable trade/degree, pay taxes, show that you're not a criminal, and 4-6 years later, you are eligible to take the citizenship test. You pass, congrats, you are a US Citizen.
Of course, no politician in the US has the balls to suggest a program like that.

They found that the air was too clean after that, so some companies re-add a pinch of pollution for flavor.

I have always heard the worst region in the US is actually West Virginia/Kentucky (where I live) because of all of our coal. Not sure if that's true or not though.

I live about an hour south of LA. The ever increasing permeance of smog is depressing.

This is nothing new. Every industrial power went through a similar phase. You should read descriptions of smog in Pittsburgh in the late 1800s. It's exactly what we see today.

15 years ago we had no visible smog where I live. I think I may have been a little gracious with the 1 hour estimate. Let's call it 1 and a half.

Don't need I go back to the 1800's. some of you Midwesterners' parents may have told you stories about this river in the 1950s.
Long story short it used to catch fire regularly.

Pollution controls cost money and time. Why do you think manufacturing moved to china? It wasn't just the labor costs.
