Mo' volts, mo' problems.
Unless you hook up about 5 devices in series to knock it down to standard PoE range, but then you'd need a fancy serial interweb cable. Too bad we're still using parallel internets or that would be easy.

Doesn't take much transient juice in an ethernet network to cause problems. Even something as simple as CAT5 outside during a lightning storm can result in dead hardware at either end.
I hope some day I get to see what happens when you apply mains power to an ethernet port...

I didn't mean specifically with super high voltage, just with a PoE cable at all. Haven't seen one in years, you can't get away with joking around about **** like that anymore

I find it impressive that a 48 port PoE switch can draw 800-900 watts in a 1U package. I'm sure they get quite toasty.

Might finally be time for an SSD upgrade. My 64GB C300 will be retired to the backup computer and will hopefully be replaced with a 256GB drive.
840 pro looks like the clear winner right now.

It is, but it just seems expensive compared to what I saw 830's going for in June. Not sure why they're more expensive now.
Thanks Obama.

I hear you loud and clear. I'm not sure if the extra specs are worth it. I'm not going to sit around benchmarking my drive all day, so I might grab any above average drive that goes on sale for more like $150. I'm seeing the 840 pro at $240, sales around $200.

I honestly don't know, just saw it this morning and then read you were looking for one in that price range

I think it's the same maker as the Intel ones or the M4 maybe.
Marvell controller and it's MLC, which are both good.

Pro has MLC NAND whereas the non-pro has TLC. That's the primary thing.

To clarify, TLC NAND has a much shorter lifespan, but most people will see the drive end up lasting at least 5-10 years anyway. Secondary thing is that the benchmarks are pretty different. 840 has middle of the pack speeds (worse than the 830), but the 840 pro competes with the top drives. Also the Pro has a 5 year warranty, non-pro is 3 years.

Thoughts? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/C3V9
He wanted three monitors, 32 Gb Ram, and wanted to be able to put it together by himself without ever doing it before.
