Concussion: Mask Issue Help
Hey guys I could really use some help from the paintball community right now,
My name is Reagan, I'm 17 and I've been playing paintball for 7 years; wouldn't give it up for anything else in the world. So about a year ago I received 2 concussions within 24 hours (Saturday and Sunday) while playing in a paintball tourney. I got hit 2x right on top of each other above my left temple and once in the back of the head where the squishy part is in the middle. Anyways I've been going to many different therapies and have improved tremendously over time. I'm just now starting to try to go back to school one class at a time for the second attempt and the Doc has cleared me to go back to paintball; however, I have to have a full helmet paintball mask that he approves of. I've searched and purchased multiple masks and so far none have fit my ginormous head.
What I'm trying to say is, do ya'll have any ideas or suggestions?
Does anybody make customizable paintball masks?
If ya'll have any connections with paintball companies or helmet producing companies (like football, baseball, etc...) could ya'll help me get in contact with them?
I don't know what to do! I feel like there's nothing out there and that I'm going to have to quit paintball! It even makes me more miserable with the season about to start up in a couple of weeks!
Thanks

You received a concussion from getting shot by a paintball? Either way, sounds like you need a custom made helmet/mask. There are some out now for paintball that cover your whole head. I think tippmann or jt make them.

Yea I know thats what I said, never thought it could happen but it did. I don't remember how close the guy was to me but its been pretty rough! I've already tried on all of the tippmann and JT products. I do need a customized helmet but I just need to find a company that's willing to do so.
Thanks though!

forget a custom mask / goggle being made.
really your best bet is to try the X-Ray Protector by Empire.
full head protection - it's what i have my son wear when he's playing because of the full protection. He's 11 and gets away with it because he can say "my dad makes me wear it for safety, otherwise i can't play"
For you, you can say the same thing except insert Doctor for dad if anybody gives you grief for wearing that in a tourney. Your team mates should back you up too.

Your best bet is to make something yourself that can be worn with a paintball mask. Maybe a motorcycle skull cap, or a big fluffy ski hat?

X-ray good choice. Haven't heard of concussion, but someone getting hit in the nerve cluster at the base of the skull will drop a grown man.

Thinking outside the box, maybe you can get away with some sort of modified beanie-hard hat combo.

Good idea, you could probably get a cheap hard hat and use a dremel tool to make inserts to stick inside a beanie.

Damn! I've been shot in that cluster from about 3ft away. Whoever said it will drop a grown man, is right. I might be able to get you a hard hat... they don't really cover back/bottom of head. You'd just pay for shipping... but, can't say where you got it, ever. Pm me, ill see if we got spares I can snag. Might not be today, tomm, this week, this month. But at some point......
But, a really thick beanie, i wear one due to what happened to me w/ a bandana under it and a headband in front. You could double up the soft ears on a flex, and you should be good to go, id think.

turtle cap maybe? its what a lot of ref's use since they tend to get shot alot. its basically just a really thick padded baseball cap. something along those lines would be much more comfortable and smaller profile than a full headshield.
...id say needing something like a hard hat or football helmet is a bit much.....you might have to sit down with your doctor and find a way to compromise.
edit: what about something like a rugby helmet? i also see no reason why you couldnt cut away the parts that you dont need padding like around the ears and stuff to make it more comfortable.

try looking into these options:
1. Turtle cap
2. Double strapping your mask with thick straps (KM has some nice thick ones)
I've worn a Tcap and been hit. You don't really feel it at all. Hundredth monkey is making them now as well
on the straps: I double strap my masks and when I get hit in places like the back of the head, it's much more likely to hit the strap and diffuse the hit.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions, We've been looking into trying to wear other sports helmets and trying to modify them with a mask. I've tried all the paintball helmets out there JT, Empire, Proto, Etc. but so far I think the Turtle Cap might work. I have never heard of Hundredth Monkey until now; hopefully everything works out. Thanks!
