Is it me or do you have to turn to the left to screw in the barrel?

Holding the back with my left hand screwing in the top of the barrel, it seemed like I had to turn to the left.

What happened to lefty loosy?

It's reverse threaded. Read the manual.

The lefty-loosey/righty-tighty is a generalized American thing. Like tonycon said it's reverse threaded, meaning you turn it counter-clockwise to screw it in. Clockwise is the best way to describe screwing in and out objects.

the join between the barrel front and back is the only reverse thread we use, all the others are standard "righty tighty"

Makes it easier to get the barrel off IMO. But yes, 'reverse threaded' it is. So don't go over torquing it...
