I think it depends on the size of the school. My ex was on the volleyball team at a small private college down the road from mine. The sports teams did hang out a lot, but they also branched off and did their own thing.
At big schools, however, you are very right. They are ALWAYS together and only hang out with other athletes.

Indeed. I lived across the hall from some of our women's volleyball team my junior year and the only time I ever saw them look decent was when they'd go out on the weekends. It doesn't really matter though because a lot of female athletes look like men.
