Axe barrel leak

I've just pulled my axes off the wall after taking a bit of an off season break.

One of them aired up fine - the other has a bit of a barrel leak.

Solenoid clicks fine. Tried resetting the poppet per the manual.

I've already tried replacing the poppet from my spare parts. Didn't change the leak one bit.

I dropped the bolt assembly in from my 2nd axe into the problem gun and no leak. So it's gotta be the large, outer orings on the front on the poppet housing.

Those aren't in the small parts kit - anyone know the size?

Based on what I see from the schematic and his the gun functions, I assume only the poppet itself or the front outer oring would yield a barrel leak.

If my thinking is not correct, please advise.

To reset the solenoid, with the eyes off, pull the trigger repeatedly until the solenoid makes a clicking sound again with each trigger pull, but do not pull the trigger more than 10 times, as this can damage the solenoid. If after 10 pulls the solenoid still doesn't click, it may need to be replaced.
Per the manual, it says turn the eyes off an pull the trigger until the solenoid clicks each time.

As mentioned in my post, the solenoid clicks the first time and every time.

Also, dropping in the complete bolt assembly from my 2nd Axe solves the leak. I do not see how it could be the solenoid with this being the case. The leak should persist even with the 2nd bolt assembly one would think.

This problem is isolated to the bolt assembly.

Poppet seal was changed. Would have to be the actual aluminum that was somehow damaged while the marker was at rest.

I'll look into a 020 oring.

They are not 020's or any standard SAE size. Most Axe o-rings are non-standard sizes, not sure why Empire chose to be so difficult but yeah.

This guy speaks the truth. Simon made them funny sizes so only one company would be making them and the quality could be controlled. You could try other orings for a temp fix, but I wouldn't suggest that for other important orings like the small bolt guide, bolt, and stuff like that.

Cool. Thx for the info.

I've got access to a 23x2,5

I'll give that a try in the interim - until I can get a full oring kit.

I'd say you're safe sticking with the 23X2.5. That's a very odd sized oring to have laying around, any idea what it was used for?

I work for a German faucet manufacturer. I've got access to 1,000's

I ended up ordering a 10x kit from OringMonkey also.

I rebuilt the entire bolt assembly to no avail. There must be some damage to the aluminum seat of the bolt guide - where the poppet seals.

Called Kee and they're hooking me up with new bolt guide and a new solenoid (just in case). I insisted it wasn't the solenoid, since my other bolt guide works leak-free in this gun (and they agreed), but wanted to send me one anyway. Who am I to say no

I'm weary of using orings from oringmonkey. I remember Simon mentioning that only one company produced the orings specifiually for the Mini/Axe. They made the orings odd sizes to control the quality of orings available to the public. Unless oringmonkey got the orings from that specific manufacturer, there might be very smaller differences in the sizes. I don't think his kits come with urethane poppet orings either.

You are correct. The poppet is a buna. Seems to work fine. Shoots perfect over the chrono. I'll deal with swapping it out more frequently vs. getting a full spares kit from Kee that has lots of stuff I don't want.

The bolt guide orings are a tiny bit bigger in cross section, which resulted in a slightly tighter fit to the main body.

So basically, in an attempt to control the quality and size of o-rings, they have created a situation where many customers end up with low quality or incorrectly sized o-rings. Great success.

Makes no sense to me, you must know that people are going to buy o-rings from other places. Quality o-rings in standard sizes are readily available and cheap, you can even buy mil-spec o-rings. Custom sizes are dumb, end of story.

Thankfully their customer service is the best in the industry to make up for silly screw + seal sizes

Alright... problem solved.

New bolt guide and solenoid arrived. Neither solved the problem!

I re-replaced the poppet seal and they leak was solved. I don't know if the first replacement had some slight damage or what, but the 2nd time was the charm.

I even went as far to put in the old bolt guide and solenoid - leak was still solved.

Was definately something with the poppet seal.

Does anyone know a place where I can buy poppet seals only AND that ship USPS 1st class mail? Don't want to pay $10+ to ship 2oz of plastic...

Have you tried contact Boss? He deals in pretty much every factory part of an Axe/mini. Either shoot him a PM on here or go to his website Here.

thanks for the info.

Looks like $6-7 to ship 4 or 5 poppet seals. Not great, but not the worst I've seen.

I'll try to shoot them a call to see if they can ship 1st class over the phone. I'm sure it's a challenge to setup your online store to cover the various size/shape/weight of so many parts for shipping purposes.

Usually you have to call to get accurate shipping rates on stuff like that. I once tried to order $10 in reg seats from Dye's website, could have shipped in an envelope with a stamp, but the postage calc wanted to charge me $36 for UPS ground.

Yeah, like I said, either call or PM him on here, he will hook you up if you talk to him as opposed to just ordering blindly.

Side note- 4 or 5? Good god do they EAT them or something? Lol. I still have the two that came with the parts kit and still haven't had to touch them yet
