Protecting your camera

I'm going to apologize in advance because I'm sure this is here somewhere or this thread is misplaced. That being said, what is the most effective way to keep your camera safe and sound while snapping pictures in paintball? I currently have a U/V cover for the lens and have been using plastic bags to keep paint out. I'm looking to get a little more serious with my photography and wondering what y'all think is good for the game. So far I've been looking at Kata bags and they seem like they would be very effective.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I have seen camera men cut holes in paint cases and stick the camera in the hole

Kata bags are great, although a lot of use don't use anything to protect the bodies. There are also neoprene covers specifically for your camera that can be bought fairly cheap on amazon.

For the lens, most of us place sweat bands on the barrel to prevent paint from getting into the cracks and what not. The filter may prevent a few hits, but you also run the risk of it shattering and scratching the front element. This is typically a large debate among paintball photographers...

It's more of a personal decision...

There's not much of a debate re: filters. They can't be relied on to stop hits. You use one so you're not scraping up the lens when you go to clean off paint spray and dirt, which can be often.

I use the highest quality b+w or Hoya filters. Shooting video with out a filter means broken filter threads and scratched front elements for me. I get hit a ton shooting video. When a filter breaks on me, I replace it, I've never had the pieces scratch the front element.

In my opinion, the best protection while shooting photos is to avoid getting your camera hit. I use no protection on my camera/lens while shooting photos. I just keep my head up and protect my camera with my body if paint is coming my way. Sweat bands and covers annoy me, plus I rarely ever get hit while shooting photos. This is my take, may not work for you, but I've had great luck shooting for the past two years

A big lens hood and filter and Sweatband over the out side of the lens and leave a body uncovered

90% of the time if your getting shot at its someone being stupid.
