Open bolt marker as a front player?
Now I could see how this could just be a matter of preference, but after seeing a lot of video and a lot of tournaments it seems that the majority of front guys used a closed bolt spool valve like a geo more often than an open bolt ego. and back players visa versa. im just getting into tournaments and play front and i just got an ego10. I didnt know if i am getting myself into unknown issues by having an open bolt marker. any opinions or answers will be appreciated.

I used an ego 08 playing front snake all last season and didn't have a problem. Its just because spool guns tend to be quieter and in a position like snake you don't want to be seen

Spools tend to be quieter as dps093 said, and smoother as well.
When you are a pro and your gun is provided to you, you have free air and you don't have to maintain it it's all personal preference for guns.
Also, closed/open bolt actually describes the firing method, not the status of the bolt. Both the Ego and Geo are open bolt, Autocockers are closed bolt. The Ego is a stacked tube marker, while the Geo is single tube.

ya that makes sense. I have enough experience to know the properties of a spool compared to a poppet gun. Sound signature i guess would be the biggest factor contributing to front guys using a spool.
what i was thinking though was when it came to head first dives if it was at all wet or muddy. How likely would it be for mud or water to jack up an ego/g6r etc?

I've seen players splash down their egos/timmies diving into the snake on rainy days and come up shooting. Water should naturally get blown out of the breech from shot to shot. If anything, I would see the spool valves as more susceptible to issues in the rain due to their needing thicker lubricants, which would be diluted by rain water.
Since you already bought the gun it's not important now. You'll find out very quickly if it's a problem. As for the noise level, anybody on a PSP field will know where you are if they have a coach. Don't worry about it.

Yea, in terms of diving in mud or water, or just diving in general and you accidentally dive on your gun, a poppit gun is more than likely to shoot fine where as a spool is more likely to have problems.

Doesn't make one bit of difference. Some guns just operate differently.

I dont really see sound being an issue during a match either. If the other team is doing their jobs and calling out positions, theyre gunna know youre in snake one way or the other

I use a g6r and I play front-mid doritos and my teammate uses a EGO 9 and he either fills in for me or I fill in for him. We have never had a problem, even at Galveston PSP 2012.

The more you play, the more you'll find that what gun a player uses depends almost completely on....
1.) Personal Preference
-or-
2.) Sponsorship Requirements

No, doesn't matter. Personal preference is really all it is.

Shoot the gun you are most comfortable shooting. I shoot an ego11, my snake guy shoots a sl8ter, and my front dorito player uses an ego10.

Hate to bring up an old thread. But with speedball i dont think it matters how quiet your gun is. If your playing right and laying paint people are GOING to know where u r all the time, the whole game.

Having a quiet gun can give a slight advantage to not giving away your position

One thing no one mentioned, and this is getting better with the newer spools, but historically spoolies have been less efficient. So if a back player throws a lot of paint often times they would pick a poppit over a spoolie just because of the shots per tank.

This. If I'm in the back and anticipate long points I'm going to use an ego over a geo so I can sling more paint without worrying about my air
