Defensive formations
Can anyone explain the different defense formations. ie: sub, nickel, quarter. I know about 4-3 and 3-4, but other than that I'm stumped

Just know that the most important formation is the spread defense, or the 3-3-5. This is the only defense designed specifically to stop the spread.

I don't know what sub is
Nickle means five defensive backs. Usually they remove a linebacker for a DB.
Dime means six defensive backs
Quarter is usually seven, though I've never heard of it called that. Usually it's just three down linemen, a linebacker, and everyone else was a fast guy who can't catch

4-3 is what teams who have no game in madden run . Think the bills and browns .
The 3-4 is what overrated defenses run - think jets
The 4-6 bear is where it's at ! This involves 4 down lineman 6 linebackers and 1 bear normally a black bear. If you run up the middle the bear eats your RB or his skittles .

46 is basically dead in the NFL except in certain situations. You'll never see it as a base d again because any decent passing game will torch it.
****, even the 4-3 is starting to die, a lot of teams who still technically use it basically have a smaller, pass rushing DE as the 4th lineman.
Won't be long before a glorified nickel is the base d of a lot of teams and the 3rd/4th LB is really an oversized corner.
