Back from 5 years of not playing!
Hey everyone . I haven't played paintball in around 5 years so I'm finally looking to get back into it. A lot has changed since I've been gone, there seems to be a lot of hate towards dye now, Smart parts is gone (or they are gog?). Angel is gone (RIP).
My last setup
Orginal PMR
Hopper was a Pulse
Crossfire 70/4500 stubby (think that was the size, and but it was a stubby)
I'm in need of a need setup and was wondering if you guys think I should jump right into a high end marker or should I start with a midrange gun (thinking Proto Reflex Rail) for now and familiarize myself with the new markers then upgrade, I never really owned a highend markers Before. I don't mind buying used (DM 12s seem to be cheap).
Thanks! For any words of wisdom.

Welcome back, not a whole lot has changed since 2008. Most of the high and mid-end guns out now are about the same as when you used to play. Of course there has been cosmetic upgrades and slight performance gains but nothing significant. If you get a macroless gun make sure to get a Low pressure output tank. Also, if your PMR was treating you well back in 08 and you were happy with it then the reflex rail would be a safe bet as it is the upgraded version of what used to be called the PMR. The main advantage of the high end hoppers (prophecy or rotor) is that they offer tool-less dis-assembly which makes them easier to clean and change batteries.
It sounds like you are dead set on getting a high-end so you might as well start there. My advice on buying high end markers is to only buy something that you have shot for yourself as that online reviews won't let you know what you personally like as that it really does come down to preference for 80% of the decision. But if you used to love the DM series back in 2008 it is very safe to say that you will like the newer ones as well.

My advice is if youre looking at midrange guns (pmr, etha, etc) get a used higher end. Used marqs are awesome and in the same price range as the mid ends. 07, 08 egos as well.

I would say go for a used Ego or Geo, but if you like the DM12 then go for it. I would go for a Rotor or Spire for a hopper

If you not playing at a high tournament level or have plenty of cash theres no reason not to go with something mid-range. I shoot a etek3 and I havent seen enough difference between the mid-level guns and high end ones to make me want to get one. People all have their favorites but really theres several good markers out there.

If your in a position where 1000$ is cheap for a paintball marker, then grab a new DM12.
If not...which I think would be most of us XD...
I would look at the B/S/T threads, Electros and Gearbag sales.
I would look for markers people are trying to get rid of quickly for $$$$ because these are often the best deals (your offering what they want most). Look for a package deal because gear is often much cheaper when buying as a bunch...an example of a deal I think you could find quickly is...
Light used Reflex Rail/Etha/Axe/Etek/DM5-9/Ego7-8/Timmy/Marq/ect...
Rotar/Spire Hopper
Fiber Glass Wrapped HPA Tank and Regulator
Barrel Kit/Inserts/Few diff. barrels/Freak bored barrel and inserts
Basic Marker Ups (all the most important stuff, on/offs, regs if needed, ect)
And if your lucky even an aftermarket anno job (much more rare lol)
All for 450-700 depending on the combination....
And honestly I'd take a DM9 with full barrel kit and basic upgrades over a stock DM12 if the paint we were shooting didn't match the stock barrel well. XD
