Anno vs duracoat vs powdercoating vs vinyl (wrapping)

Just what the title suggests. Give me some ideas advantages and disadvantages. As I see it so far...
Anno Adv: industry standard, durable, variety of colors
Dis: expensive aftermarket, DIY needs lots of chemicals and equipment, only possible to anno aluminum/metal?

Duracoat Adv: durable, variety of colors can be painted over metal or plastic, camo patterns, cheaper than annodizing
Dis:looks a lot like paint sprayed on (IMO), easier for DIY home project

Powder coat Adv: need real help here
Dis: specialized equipment, cost?

Vinyl wrap: Adv: cheaper than anno and about the same as duracoat, carbon fiber look
Dis: vinyl sheets glued on, visible seems, can't or shouldn't do on tight bend areas like trigger frames etc

Just keep it rolling. I am not an expert so those who have the experience shine that light on the rest of us. I could see this becoming a sticky in the far future so I reserved the next couple of pages to show examples and do an side by side comparison

Powder coat can be strong as hell, but idk how well and how thick it would appear on a gun, or how it would look. I feel like I've seen a powder coated gun, but I cant remember what it looked like.

In the Navy what we could remove from the ship was powder coated. Only issue I see with this method is its chipping. I saw on a number of occasions that when the impact (yes we bump into our metal ladders with weight handling gear, toolboxes, etc) was metal on metal the chip was fairly large. With diving in paintball and other rough handling I wonder how powder coating will hold up.

You also missed that anodizing is miles tougher as it is part of the metal itself...not a coating applied to the metal.

Anodizing can not chip..it can only ding or scratch.

Anodizing reduces friction as it is a insulator as well as being very very hard.

Powder-coat comes in many different forms to many to list...It can be very tough, slick, hard ect, but a lot of times still looks like paint and will chip eventually.

You can do powder-coat for pretty cheap. A few hundred for a good gun and a few bucks for an old oven and you've got it. Keep in mind it will never be as tough as anodizing.

Duracoat is paint....yea it can take a beating for being paint..but its still paint.

Vinyl is a temporary thing..it is not durable and will tear..if you enjoy switching the look of your gun up frequently its a perfect choice and it will protect the finish underneath to a degree. When I first saw it on a paintball gun I thought it was a brilliant idea simply because it will protect the finish for when you want to sell it.

In conclusion for aluminum, anodizing will always be the best..you will rarely see machined parts that are powder-coated or painted as anodizing is the industry standard for aluminum as you stated..and there are many reasons for that.

With the right vinyl you can get any design, not just carbon fiber. The sheets aren't glued on either, the vinyl has it's own adhesive that isn't that hard to remove. It can also be durable and last when laminated. Look at all the cars that are wrapped, you can get years of use without being redone. I think the biggest thing would be to keep it clean around the seams.

Ive done some vinyl designs for trigger frames and detailed guns. I find its best to put a lighter to it for second so it can mold to the form of the body or frame of the gun. I also like the Vinyl designs on the gun becuase you can change designs or colors at any point... once you anno, your pretty much stuck with that look unless you spend more money

Anodizing is also chemically resistant, where the others are not. It may cost more, but it is superior to any coating or skin that you can put on your gun.

If your going for a firearm coating, use Cerakote instead of Duracoat. It is a much better coating. I use them on all my firearms.

You also forgot Hydrographics.

Well, I've duracoated many guns. As for durability of it, check out the video on the first page of my thread. I beat the crap out of that barrel. See link below. I have yet to have a single unsatisfied customer.

I've had a powdercoat customer come to me cause they said that the company he went with couldn't powedercoat his whole Luxe. I was up to the task and did a job that he loved. Anno is def the first choice, but it is so expensive.

Note: You have to be careful when duracoating your guns or you can mess it up. If you want to do it yourself...practice, practice, practice...but that means more duracoat materials = more money. It all depends on what you are into. It's all prefrerence.

tippmanns are powdercoated...its not super durable...

example:

last time you saw a rental gun that was anno'd (like a piranha G2) what did the finish look like? most still look good maybe some scratches or tool marks but still good...

last time you saw a rental gun that was powdercoated (like a Tippmann 98) what did the finish look like? most 98's I've seen that have been around the block look like ****, covered in chips, bubbles, or raw aluminum spots...

just saying...

I don't think tippmanns are actually powdercoated. I think that is some type of baked in enamel paint.

Vinyl or wrapping is kinda unique in that it is removable. Crappy looking gun wrap it = looking good until you can afford anno or better. Have seen some nice wrapping used as accent pieces though.

I put vinyl on a gun any day before I painted it. There is a guy over in the service forum who did some CLEAN carbon vinyl installs on several high end guns. I've seen a victory and NT done nicer that some anodizing jobs.
